Didn’t hear back from McKinsey a Month after final round

Hi

i had my final round at McKinsey a MONTH ago, but didn hear back yet regarding the hiring decision.
I had a couple of calls with recruiter on biweekly interval, first time she mentioned that  they will call me for a hiring decision and feedback within a week and they didn’t.
Second call she said that they were busy and again expect a call within this week which still nothing yet knowing that tomorrow is last working week day. The dashboard status is “in progress “

I know that I have nothing to do here except waiting , but any advices?

If no feedback, shall I call her for a third time (I am not in favor of that)?

what do yo think?

Hi there,

Sorry to hear - that's a pain.

If it makes you feel any better, I've had candidates that got an offer after waiting 2 months. So, you're not alone and this isn't necessarily an indication of a rejection.

The honest truth is this is possibly because they are waiting on another candidate to confirm/deny their offer. Again, possibly. Alternatively, they could just be immensely busy and are struggling to get the partners to align.

I would not reach out again this year. Rather, I would reach out the first week of Jan.

Hey there,

Super annoying and the cases where this happens are increasing in frequency over the last couple of months, unfortunately!

At this point, there is not much you can do, to be honest. If they knew already, they would have called or notified you by now.

I would wait as Ian suggested and try to get back to them after the Christmas break. My hunch is that they will contact you before that though!

Fingers crossed!

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

before offer decisions are communicated, they have to be aligned between HR and the interviewers in the process. This can sometimes take time for various reasons. A few common ones are listed below for a general overview:

  • internal scheduling conflicts between HR and the interviewers, especially when partners need to be involved
  • the firm is still conducting more final round interviews with other candidates and they might want to wait for that to play out to look at the full candidate picture before extending final offers
  • offers have been extended to “first choice” candidates and the firm is trying to keep “backup” candidates on hold until they know who accepted and who declined their first batch of offers
  • holidays or year-end shutdown delay the decision-making and communication process
  • there is uncertainty internally around budget and the exact headcount they can actually hire so they are trying to buy time

I know that this is unsettling and every candidate wants to have clarity on the status sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, you'll always have to wait for the official word.

However, it is best to just assume a rejection and continue with the recruiting efforts with other firms until you have a written offer in your hands. That way you at least won't lose time.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear that the waiting time was so long.

McKinsey used to be quite efficient in communicating the outcome after interviews. However, in the last months they have been apparently quite busy in several offices.

I would expect that they will communicate the outcome this week as promised. If not:

  • If you have another offer (even not consulting related), you can call them to let them know about that and ask if they could provide feedback so that you can make a decision
  • If you don't have other offers, I would follow up in January, as suggested by Ian

Best,

Francesco

This is frustrating indeed. But could well be due to this time of the year with hols etc.

I suggest leave it for now and follow-up in the new year.

Fingers crossed for you.

I hope you received an answer by now, but in case you didn't, wait until the end of the first week of January, as it is unlikely you will get an answer during the holiday season.

If you don't get an answer until the 7th, call them again on the 10th, or just send them a friendly reminder email.

I have never heard of a waiting period that long. I would agree that you wouldn't really have anything to gain by calling a 3rd time. Also, there's really nothing else you can do as you already pointed out. This is one of those things where the only advice is indeed “relax” and sit back.

I hope by now it's all sorted with good news…
