Any tips for online case interviews?

Dear all,

I am seeking advice on tips for online case interviews. Personally, I find it quite hard to deliberately watch the webcam, while talking and thinking at the same time. Any specific tips on how to engage better with the online interviewer?

Hi there,

From the point of view you describe it is equally hard to do in person: you have to watch the interviewer and keep it conversational while talking and thinking.

I think the general tips for online meetings apply:

  • Make sure your camera is set at the right level, you have the right lighting and background, etc., - all of these will help the interviewer be engaged with what you say rather than something being off on your video
  • Hide the self-view. There are some studies out there that show when we have the option to see ourselves, we would look at our picture more than at others - this is something you want to avoid at all costs.
  • Try a positive framing in your mind: the interviewer genuinely wants you to do well, if it seems like they are not paying attention they are probably just taking notes, if they seem disengaged it is more likely that they are tired than not liking you.
  • Think of the webcam = looking into the eyes of the interviewer. Practice in your mock cases to look from time to time straight in the camera, just like you would look into the eyes of another person. No need to stare at it :)

I have also used to show my structure on camera, but some people don't think this is a good idea, so I guess it is more of a personal preference than a general advice.

Hope this helps,

Ariadna

Hi there,

Q: Any tips for online case interviews?

Below you can find a few tips for a video interview:

  1. Prepare the place for the call in advance. A quiet environment is a must-have (this includes airplane mode for your phone). Also, be sure that you have a proper background.
  2. Test audio and webcam. Check in advance that both work properly.
  3. Prepare in front of you all the material you need (eg structures). So you won't have to look for it during the interview/ won't make it clear you are reading it.
  4. Wear what you would wear in a face-to-face interview. The standard dress code for an interview.
  5. Connect at least 5 minutes in advance. So that you can test everything is working fine.
  6. Smile during the call. It is a great way to show energy.
  7. Use numbers when communicating your structures. This is important as well in a face-to-face interview but even more in a virtual one. It will make it easier for the interviewer to follow you since they probably cannot see your notes. As an example:“In order to help our client, I would like to focus on three main areas. First, I would like to focus on [FIRST TOPIC], secondly on [SECOND TOPIC], finally on [THIRD TOPIC]. Let me start with the first one".
  8. Prepare your own questions. Relevant questions at the end are a great way to show your interest in the company and get additional points. It is even more important in a phone/video interview, as the interviewer will naturally connect less with you. You can find some tips on the ideal questions to ask at the end of your call here.
  9. Bonus: record yourself using Zoom before the interview, simulating the call. You might notice a few things to correct, sound and video issues, incorrect angle of the webcam, etc.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi there,

Agree - it's a bit harder to connect with the interviewer and see their hints online compared to an in-person setting.

However, there are also many benefits of doing it from home and the experience is a bit more relaxed.

Apart from all the standard tips (theory), you need to practice online cases and presentations before the real interview.

  • Set up a few cases with case buddies or engage a coach
  • Run the interviews via Zoom and record it to see how you come across
  • Ask for feedback on your presentation and communication
  • Pay special attention to structured communication (top-down, numbered, signposted, engaged and confident, qualifications etc) to keep the interviewer in the loop

All the best,

Florian

Place your webcam at eye level and try to look into the camera when speaking. It helps create the illusion of eye contact, making the interaction feel more personal. Nod and use verbal affirmations (like "I see" or "That's interesting") to show you’re engaged. This can also buy you a moment to think
