Hi to all,

I have recently received a PhD degree in Civil Engineering from US university (Non target school but tier 1 research institution) My undergraduate and masters degrees were also from the US In civil engineering.  I just started working as an engineer 5 months ago and want to switch to consulting. I am interested in the Middle east region. I am a US citizen but originally from the Middle East and speak Arabic fluently. Do you think there will be a chance for me to get accepted in MBB Middle East (Dubai particularly) especially that I don’t have any connections there as all my college education has been in the US.

I have applied before to Engineering positions there and unfortunately no luck so I was wondering if it is worth it to apply to consulting positions or if it would be impossible to be considered for interview without referral.

Thank you very much

Hi there,

It's not impossible to be considered without a referral, but it certainly helps.

You have a very attractive profile and the fact that you lived and studied in the US is an asset, not a liability. The reason why a referral would help is because it will help you differentiate you among the other candidates. The Middle East is an attractive region at the moment and that is especially the case for offices like Dubai. The competition is crazy.

Sending you HERE an article I wrote for PrepLounge on how you can start developing a relationship with consultants through coffee chats so that you can eventually get a referral.

Feel free to also reach out individually for a chat regarding your potential application strategy.

Best,

Cristian

Hi there,

My view is that there is always a chance (the % changes based on a multitude of factors).

Try.

You'll find out.

The fact that you speak Arabic is very helpful. If you have citizenship as well, that is even better. Finally, if you can get some sort of “city/country” line on your resume that is in ME, that also helps.

Remember, networking is absolutely critical here.

Also remember that your odds aren't great. You're not in the right field, country, nor university. This might be a longer-run goal where you'll have to build up towards this over the next 2-3 years through targeted experiences.

Good luck!

Based on my experience, I believe there is definitely a chance for you to be accepted by MBB in the Middle East, particularly in Dubai. Here are a few points to consider:

Your educational background in Civil Engineering, including a PhD from a tier 1 research institution, showcases your expertise and analytical skills, which are highly valued in consulting.

Your fluency in Arabic is a valuable asset, especially in the Middle East market. It positions you well to work on projects in the region and engage with local clients.

While having connections can be helpful, it is not a prerequisite for getting considered for an interview. Consulting firms like MBB have structured recruitment processes that assess candidates based on their qualifications and potential.

It's important to tailor your application to highlight your relevant skills, experiences, and language proficiency. Showcase your ability to adapt to new environments, work in diverse teams, and solve complex problems.

Consider reaching out to individuals within the firm or attending networking events to expand your professional network in the Middle East. This can help you gain insights and potentially secure a referral, which can enhance your chances of being considered for an interview.

Remember, each candidate is evaluated on their own merits, and MBB looks for exceptional talent from diverse backgrounds

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on completing your PhD!

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • It is certainly possible for you to pursue a career in consulting in the Middle East, although it may be more challenging without connections in the region.
  • To increase your chances of success, I would recommend networking as much as possible and building relationships with professionals in the consulting industry in the Middle East. This could include attending industry events, reaching out to alumni from your university who work in the region, and seeking out mentors who can provide guidance and advice.
  • You may also want to consider gaining additional work experience in the engineering industry before transitioning to consulting. This can help you develop a stronger foundation of skills and knowledge that will be valuable in a consulting role.
  • Ultimately, it is important to be persistent and continue to apply for consulting positions in the Middle East, even if you do not have a referral. It is always worth a shot to apply, as you never know what opportunities may arise.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Generally, there is a good chance, yes!

Your bio lacks a bit of information to answer it more precisely. MBBs are looking for a couple of traits in every applicant's resume.

The fact that you have an engineering background from the US is not a negative. Your language is a big plus!

What is also important are 4 other things:

  1. What about your academic achievements (prestige of university and program, GPA,…)
  2. What about the professional experience (internships, full-time jobs with leading companies in your field)
  3. Time spent abroad (you tick that box :-))
  4. Extracurricular activities (leadership positions, etc.)

If some of those match, you will have good chances. Also, Middle East is pretty much the only reason growing at the moment.

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

Q: I am a US citizen but originally from the Middle East and speak Arabic fluently. Do you think there will be a chance for me to get accepted in MBB Middle East (Dubai particularly) especially that I don’t have any connections there as all my college education has been in the US.

We would need to see your CV for a proper assessment. In general, given you are not from a target school and have no connection with the Middle East, you should definitely look for a referral. Even if currently you don’t have any connection, there are ways to get one (please feel free to PM me for more info).

You can find more on referrals below:

▶ The Exact Steps to Get a Referral

Please also note that several companies are favoring areas different from Dubai (eg Riyadh) for hiring in the Middle East now.

For any questions please feel free to PM me.

Good luck!

Francesco

I would definitely advise you to try and get a referral anyways, as it always helps. What you could also do is apply to US offices and then ask for a transfer, if you think your profile and experiences carry significantly more weight in the US.
