Should I stay on to generalist projects at EYP? Or should I take up the opportunity to specialise in Digital Healthcare in EY Business Consulting? Is there a brand value delta that I will give up in the process? Any thoughts?

Hello!

There no absolute truth here, not at all. Both could be great options, it depends on you:

  • What do you want to do longer term? If healthcare is your passion, then for sure makes sense. If you are interested in many industries or perhaps looking for stepping into MBB later, probably remaining as a generalist opens you more doors
  • Do you konw the poeple in both workstreams? This can make a huge difference
  • Same with the career plans, are they anyhow different among the two of them?

As you can see, totally dpeends on the fit with YOU!

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hi Clara, thanks for this. Super helpful. Do you think a digital specialisation will help my chances to apply to MBB with a digital healthcare expertise. Have you (or anyone else here) heard of MBBs hiring consultants at EM level for their SME?

Hey there,

Answer the following questions:

  • Where do you see a better fit at the moment?
  • Where do see yourself in a few years?

If both align, excellent, if not, then chose the one that is more important for you NOW. I'd argue that the difference won't be enormous for your future.

For instance, I also specialized mostly in travel, transportation, and logistics at McKinsey, yet when I left did something completely different. It is more about the problem-solving approach, rather than specific domain knowledge when you move from consulting to industry...

Cheers,

Florian

Hi Florian. Sounds like a great approach to the question at hand. I’m not looking to move to industry any time soon but definitely want to explore Healthcare Investment Funds as the next step post consulting (in the next 4-5 years). Do you think going deep into the digital healthcare space will help in this regard? I see that the DTx market is seeing increasing investments from the mega and midsize funds recently, and I’d love to understand the thought that goes into these decisions. What is your opinion on this? Do you believe that a digital expertise (of course complemented with strong financial modelling skills) will help bag a role in a Healthcare focused fund?

Hi there,

You haven't told us anything about you!

This is like asking should I buy this sexy racecar or super safe, reliable family car. Depends on your situation!

What do you want? Picture your future, your interests, your skills, etc...and pick the option that moves you in that direction.

In terms of brand loss, I don't see any here. In terms of specializing, well, you're going to have to eventually anyway!

Hi Ian, that makes complete sense! Just to avoid duplication, I have replied to Florian’s question on this thread around my thoughts about next steps and interests. Would you have an opinion on this?

Hi,

Overtime every consultant becomes a specialist in something. There is no other way. The earlier you find the industry / function you are excited about, the better. Specializing will give you:

  • Faster growth in consulting
  • Better exit opportunities (clients, other consulting companies)
  • Better work-life balance (predictable clients, working hours, the expertise you can leverage)

Best

Hi, it depends on your career goal. If you're serious into strategy consulting EYP would be better, if you prefer the healthcare industry I would go for EY

Best,
Antonello

If I understand correctly, you already have EYP on your resumé. So, while additional years in strategy in EYP are always positive, they won't be as valuable as a digital healthcare role if... if that is the type of work or industry you want in the future.

If you don't have a preference... then EYP would be much better. As a note, I have worked for both EYP and EY Consulting.
