Has anyone here interviewed at BCG Dubai before? I was just wondering whether the case given is highly likely to be a public sector case or anything?

Hello,

A public sector company could operate in Oil and Gas, Retail, PE, Manufaturing, Telecom, etc.

Thus, you're not necessarily narrowing down the list of industries when you just say “public sector”.

What might help you narrow down is:

1) Looking up your interviewer on LinkedIn and seeing what projects they have done recently / what industry they specialize in - again, there is absolutely no guarantee that they ask something from those industries, but it is slightly more likely than not having any idea at all.

2) Network with consultants in the firm to get an idea of what industries are popular.

Instead of focussing on the industries per se, focus on the style of interviews. Middle East consulting firms have a different style of casing - they use unstructured and open ended cases to test your ability to operate with limited information where sky is the limit (quite similar to real life projects).

Reach out to me via chat if you would like to practice unstructured partner level cases.

Best,

Rushabh

Hi there,

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • First of all, nobody knows for certain. While I have seen public sector case studies being solved in the interviews of my coachees frequently, this is not a guarantee.
  • Moreover, given that public sector case studies are embedded in a specific commercial industry, e.g., a state-owned financial services company, the range of industries is still too broad to limit your preparation to it.
  • Lastly, I would highly advise you to have a basic understanding of the dominant industries either way, both globally and in the Middle East. You may find industry overviews in several case study books that can serve this purpose.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

To be honest, not really. You can still get any case, and even if “public sector” would have a higher share of “case types” it would still not be significant enough to suggest that you should particularly focus on that “industry”.

By the way, I am currently doing a projet for a government that is 80% similar to a project I did 6 months ago for a private company. I could easily turn it into a case, and it would make zero difference whether I said “government is considering investing in X” or “private company is considering investing in X” (or “goverment wants to know industry X revenue potential”.

You should know about many industries - focusing on a particular one is not good preparation.

Nothing is likely.

Literally any one thing you expect is more likely to not happen than to happen. (I'm not joking)

Please stay flexible, adaptable, and open-minded. They can ask you anything, and you should be ready for that.

Of course, in general, Dubai has more tourism, public sector, and energy work and will therefore lean that way with cases…but if you go in only prepared for that you are likely to fail.
