Non-target school, low GPA – do I have a chance in IB?

I go to a non-target school, and my GPA isn’t stellar (around 3.4), but I’ve done two solid finance internships, one in corporate finance and one in a boutique M&A shop. I’ve been networking hard, but I feel like I’m always at a disadvantage compared to target-school candidates. Do banks actually take non-target candidates seriously? Any advice for me??

Hey there,

the short answer is: Yes, you still have a shot.

Is it harder from a non-target with a lower GPA? Definitely. But you’ve already done two solid finance internships and have been networking hard, so that's a good starting point.

Banks do take non-target candidates seriously, but they need to see a reason to take a chance on you. Your internships help a lot, but you absolutely need to shine in your interviews and make sure you present a round story.

If you need any help with that, feel free to reach out.

Hi,
Yes, you can still break into investment banking despite attending a non-target school and having a lower GPA. Focus on leveraging your internships by highlighting relevant skills, particularly in corporate finance and M&A. Networking strategically is key—build relationships, especially with professionals at boutique and middle-market firms that may be more open to non-target candidates. Perfect your pitch by explaining your background and motivation, and strengthen your technical skills, particularly in financial modeling and Excel. Most importantly, stay persistent—keep applying, networking, and learning. With resilience and effort, you can overcome these challenges and break into the industry.

Hey, I totally get where you're coming from. Coming from a non-target school can feel like a barrier, but your solid internships in finance really count in your favor. Banks do take non-target candidates seriously if you show strong, relevant experience and a willingness to work hard. Keep networking, work on your interview skills, and be ready to highlight how your experience sets you apart from the typical target-school candidate. It might take a bit more effort, but it's definitely possible!
