Capgemini Invent or P&G?

Hi folks,

I got to make a decision until next Monday. Either start as an Analytics & Insights Manager at P&G and leverage my data skills or become a Transformation Consultant at Invent with my prior experience in restructuring.

To be upfront about it, neither were my desired jobs, but I failed my interviews at Simon Kucher and Berger. I also need to start somewhere in March. Got to pay my rent somehow. That's why I got to figure out what my Plan B should look like. For the past years, I pushed hard to reach my goals and of course, once I start somewhere my mindset can change quickly. However, as of right now I cannot let go and want to get your impression of which position offers the best chances to switch?

Doing the job you like no matter what it is will always lead to success in the long term. Unfortunately, I have almost equal preferences for both and I more or less get the same pay including benefits. Aside, the teams are also both great. I could continue to go down the list of criteria I compared. I think ultimately it comes down to whether the path of specializing in digitalization vs. data analytics is more promising. If starting as a consultant at Invent beats the prestige of P&G?

This decision seems like a real draw to me. I do have a slight preference, however, I would like to get the thoughts of some kind internet strangers.

Cheers

Hi there,

I would consider the following to decide:

  • Where do you want to be in 5-10 years? Look at the company that can help you to achieve that goal faster. You can check LinkedIn for that. It is more important that you want to do something related to one of the options long-term (digitalization or data analytics in your case), rather than one of the two is more “promising”.
  • If you consider the average consultant/partner you talked to in each company, which one would you rather be? Quoting Jim Rohn, you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. You will spend a lot of time with your colleagues in the next years - be sure you choose a company where the people are close to the person you want to become.
  • What is your gut feeling telling you? Our gut feeling is able to catch elements we cannot initially rationalize. You may “feel” a company is better, but don’t know exactly why. Try to find out why you feel that way, do some research on that and try to understand if that point is valid.

If you want to do extra due diligence, contact Alumni of your university (not current consultants) that worked in that office (bonus if they worked for both companies). You will learn more in a 30min call with them than with any online research you may do.

Best,

Francesco

Hello!

I love the way your framed your question, truly.

As you say, the two options are very very similar -and most likely not going to be a definitive one, since you will change somewhen soon,as they are not your dream jobs-.

People that I know that have been in your shoes requested to spend one full day with the teams in both companies, and had it really clear at the end of the day, since there are many subtle differences you can only observe there.

Why don´t you try that to see what is the best fit?

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hi there,

I can't help but note that no-one has really stuck their neck out here and directly answered your question.

Thank you for clearly articulating your goal.

Given your goal, The Transformation Consultant role is the best move. This will give you the skills, expertise, network, and resume to make a switch into strategy consulting clear. Furthermore, Transformation (especially Digital Transformation) is a huge focus of many consulting firms now, so this will attract them further to you.

The P&G role will “trap” you into Data Analytics/Ops.

How can you be sure just by knowing the goal? Its dangerous to make choices for others. You are better off guiding, advising & coaching. But please let the individual choose for themselves

Completely agree, I like others coaches providing ideas & guidance

I asked the question and I really looked for some concrete answers. I appreciate Ian's input. My pro/contra list of "reflective guidance thoughts" is already way too long. Sometimes a straight answer from someone with experience is simply the best you can get
