Tips preparing for BCG R2

Hi all,

Just learned that I made it to R2 at BCG :). Any tips on how to prepare (case interview, written case and personal fit)??

Best,

Pieter

Congrats! Not many even pass the first round, so BCG definitely thinks you have the potential.

Firstly, I would encourage you to ask for feedback from R1 - if they do share it, it can be very useful as a guide on what you need to focus on and prioritize.

You will often hear people say that R2 interviewers (MDPs) typically focus more on insights & business judgment and less focused into other aspects e.g. the math.

  • One common weakness or feedback I often hear from R2 interviewers is that the candidate "did not get to deep insights / 2nd order insights" - so this is something you may want to focus on

Now, while I think this is a reasonable understanding of the style of many MDPs (e.g. they are strategic, don't often go too into the details), but I would urge you not to go in with fixed expectations

  • The reason is because really anything can happen.. one of my R2 cases had a full complex math problem that I had to solve, and the other MDP basically drew a chart on the board and asked me to talk about it.

Therefore what's most important is you are confident in your fundamentals across problem solving (of which insight generation is just 1 aspect) - this is what's going to make you ready for anything.

All the best!

Congrats, Pieter! That's an amazing achievement in and of itself.

I recommend that you first of all get clear on what the feedback was from the first round. You will be expected to show an improvement on that.

Then work on that feedback and consider getting expert support on the challenging parts.

Aside from this, make sure you deliver at least as good of a performance as in round 1.

Best,
Cristian

Hey Pieter,

Congrats on making it to R2, that’s huge! :) Focus now on sharpening structure and synthesis in live cases. R2 cases can be less formulaic, so expect more ambiguous or strategic questions. For the written case, practice reading exhibits fast, pulling 2–3 key insights, and building a clear recommendation in slides or bullets. For fit, they may go deeper into your motivations and challenge your answers more, be personal, confident, and structured.

Let me know if you want to practice anything together!

Best,
Alessa
