Which would better position me for McKinsey Digital — a BCG internship or a tech/product role?

I was recently invited to McKinsey Digital (last round) but failed the final partner interview. They told me I could reapply in 9–12 months and suggested gaining more experience in the meantime until the end of my studies next year. I now have an offer from BCG for an internship, but my long-term plan is to exit into tech (ideally Product Management) after McKinsey Digital.

Would BCG be the smarter interim step, or should I align my next/last internship more directly toward tech? (I will also try to apply directly for tech roles on entry level for next year... But don't have high hopes for that). Also, how is BCG internally structured for digital/tech work (for example: Advanced Technologies, GenAI/Data Science Strategy) compared to McKinsey Digital?

PS: I already have experience at an T2 strategy consulting firm

Hello! If McKinsey Digital is your goal, the BCG internship is a strong move because it adds MBB brand recognition and core consulting skills that transfer really well to Digital and later to PM roles.

To make it even more relevant, try to get staffed on BCG X, Platinion, or digital strategy projects. This will give you the tech/digital exposure that will strengthen your reapplication story.

A direct product/tech role now would give hands-on PM experience, but in my opinion, it won’t carry the same weight with McKinsey’s recruiters as an MBB internship... If reapplying is the priority, BCG with targeted digital staffing is your best bet :) good luck!

Hi there,

Q: Would BCG be the smarter interim step, or should I align my next/last internship more directly toward tech?

If the goal is McKinsey Digital, the BCG internship will most likely be the best option, given that you will add relevant strategy consulting experience and a strong brand name.

On the other hand, given you want to end up in tech product management, you might want to check if experience at McKinsey Digital is really necessary, or whether you could apply now to a tech company and reach that role internally.

Good luck!

Hi there,

I would agree with Francesco. If you're solving for McK digital, the BCG internship is great. However I don't think McK Digital is really the best stepping stone for a Tech PM role. To my knowledge most PM roles typically require prior experience as PM. The pivot from generalist consulting -> PM is quite rare. Assuming you're joining as an integrative consultant in McK digital, you're going to be doing similar studies to your non-McK digital peers. You could make an interim transition from generalist consultant -> QuantumBlack Product Manager (if your office has QB) but it seems like too many unnecessary interim steps if you're trying to get into tech PM.

Hello ! If Tech is your end goal, I would argue that MBB consulting is not really an entry point. You can obviously learn a lot (I myself had Product manager roles within McKinsey Digital, I am sure BCG digital would be the same), but I know very little people who were able to exit to Tech roles, as most tech firms would not consider it as enough exposure. Unless you're planning to go for Strategy & Ops roles in tech firms, I would recommend trying to directly break into Tech (for example by starting at smaller tech firms) rather that going through MBB (basically two different carreer options).
Best of luck !

Tough to say. Honestly, both are great options.

If you have a BCG offer, I would definitely take it. At the end of the day, they are a fellow MBB firm to McKinsey, so it proves to them that you are already at MBB standard.

Also, when you re-apply, make sure that you apply to other firms as well. Regardless of your prep, you might still get unlucky, so don't pin everything on McK.

Best,
Cristian
