Pricing cases examples

Hi,

I have noticed that Preplounge does not really have any pricing cases on its website. Are there resources that include pricing cases with decent answers so that it is possible to crosscheck if my thinking goes into the right direction?

Thank you!

Hi there,

Pricing cases are definitely less common than profitability or market entry cases, but there are some good resources:

  • Crafting Cases has several pricing and willingness-to-pay drills, including solutions and interviewer notes.
  • CaseCoach includes pricing questions in a number of its interview case library cases.

See also the following links with some examples:

  • https://www.rocketblocks.me/blog/pricing-case-interviews.php
  • https://www.casebasix.com/pages/pricing-case-interview-guide

One tip: don't restrict yourself to cases explicitly labeled "pricing." Many profitability or new product launch cases include a pricing component that can be isolated and practiced on its own.

Over the years, I've also created several pricing-focused cases for my coaching sessions. They cover different scenarios (e.g., innovative products, B2B pricing, willingness to pay, and pricing strategy under uncertainty) and include detailed solution approaches. If you're looking to practice this area in a structured way, feel free to reach out.

Hi!
Regarding your comment: "Crafting Cases has several pricing and willingness-to-pay drills, including solutions and interviewer notes." --> where can I find the pricing cases? In the fundamentals (free) course or somewhere else?

Hi,

PrepLounge does have few pricing cases in its library. Careful though, since many are tagged "Pricing" but are really profitability or market-entry cases with a price angle. Here are four where determining or defending a price is the actual core of the case:

By the way, if you need more cases to prep, once you have mastered the logic behind the three pricing lenses (cost-based for your floor, competition-based for your reference point, value-based for your ceiling), you can apply them to any profitability or product-launch case with a price component and drill the pricing part on its own.

Hope it helps, and feel free to drop me a message if you want to talk through any of them.

Thank you for mentioning my case "Baby Formula" - it is indeed a great pricing case study for users to practice.

Hi there,

Thanks for letting me know.

I'll try to create something on pricing in the coming period.

In the meantime, look for case books online and search for pricing.

Alternative, AI is decent by now at generating cases. You can try practicing a few from there, needless to say with the usual doubt on quality.

Best,
Cristian

You're right that pricing cases are underrepresented compared to the classic profitability or market entry cases.

A few good alternatives are:

  • MBA consulting casebooks (some include pricing and commercial strategy cases)
  • Simon-Kucher-style commercial cases you can find online
  • Practicing pricing frameworks by adapting standard cases (e.g., "Should the client increase prices?", "How would you price a new product?", "How do you estimate willingness to pay?")

The important thing is not to memorize a pricing framework. Good pricing cases usually test your ability to think through questions such as:

  • What drives willingness to pay?
  • How price-sensitive are different customer segments?
  • What is the competitive context?
  • What are the volume vs. margin trade-offs?
  • How would you validate your recommendation?

If you're interviewing with firms like Simon-Kucher, pricing becomes much more important than in a typical consulting interview.

Feel free to DM me if that's your target. I've helped several candidates prepare for pricing-focused interviews, and before that I worked at Simon-Kucher myself, where I was also involved in recruiting. I'd be happy to point you toward the right resources and explain what interviewers are really looking for.

You're right, clean pricing cases with full model answers are genuinely hard to find. Most casebooks bury pricing inside a bigger case instead of isolating it.

MBA club casebooks (Wharton, Kellogg, Duke, INSEAD). Free online and your best bet. Search the PDFs for "pricing" and you'll find worked solutions to check against.

But the better move is to build your own practice. Since full cases are scarce, take any product and run it through the structure: cost sets the floor, value sets the ceiling, competitors set the reference point, then position by strategy. Do that on five products and it'll click faster than hunting for the perfect case.

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • You are right that clean pricing cases are hard to find (except for my case study "Baby Formula" here on PrepLounge). The best free sources outside of PrepLounge are business school case books. Many of them do contain pricing cases, you just have to open them and search for them.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming pre-interview assessments and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Good pricing case examples are scattered, but the best sources are MBA casebooks with full solutions. The Ross, Wharton and Kellogg books all include value‑based pricing cases you can cross‑check, and the INSEAD book has a few simple ones that walk through willingness to pay step by step. You can also use Victor Cheng’s materials for basic logic and the HBS “New Product Pricing” cases for clean value‑based reasoning. What matters is practising cases where you estimate customer value, choose a price inside that range and sanity‑check with costs. If you want, I can point you to a short practice flow you can use for any pricing prompt.
