Got BCG TDA offer but initially applied for Generalist. Any insights on real project differences?

Hi everyone,
I recently got an offer from BCG TDA, but I initially applied for the Generalist track since my main interest is in traditional strategy topics like market entry, growth strategy, etc.. However, due to my background in digital/tech, I was advised to join TDA instead.

I’ve heard that TDA often works alongside Generalists and also does strategy work, just more focused on digital transformation. But I’m still a bit concerned. My question is: how different is TDA’s “strategy” work compared to what Generalists do? Does it still tend to be more technical / operational in practice?

Also, during my interviews, the case studies I received weren’t particularly digital-focused. They felt similar to Generalist cases, which makes me wonder how distinct the actual project experience will be.

Would really appreciate any insights from those with experience in BCG TDA:

  • How different is TDA’s strategy work from Generalist projects in practice?
  • Is it feasible to transition to Generalist later if I want to focus more on pure strategy?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Hi there,

That's clear and great that you're trying to figure this out early on.

I would suggest two things

1. Speak with the recruiter to go deeper into the differences between the roles

2. Speak with actual consultants in those roles to understand the distinction better

That the cases were not digital focused I'm not surprised. They don't have to be. But ideally you should've know this already from the discussion with the recruiter.

Best,
Cristian
