Entry-level application with internship experience

I had an MBB internship and will apply to different firms. Is it possible to get a position that is not entry-level because I had a consulting experience in my internship? Will this work with MBBs? how about tier-2? In the middle east

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the MBB internship!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, it's great that you've completed an internship with MBB, and this experience will certainly benefit your future applications. However, it is not realistic to expect that an internship would be considered equivalent to full-time work experience and therefore enable you to apply to any full-time position other than entry-level. Even with full-time work experience, having this experience discounted is very typical across all consulting firms.
  • Moreover, while it might be tempting to seek a position above entry-level, I would highly advise you to consider applying for the entry-level positions. The level of training and support provided at the entry-level will ensure a strong foundation for your consulting career.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hello,

Typically doing an internship would put you in good standing for an entry-level position, but I don't think an internship would be considered enough experience to go beyond that at any firm, unfortunately. I think it's quite unlikely.

Nope, nowhere. It's an internship, you still need to start at an entry level role.

And that's actually good for you, because if you join as an experienced hire you are expected to perform as an experienced consultant. If you're not at the right level of performance you may be counseled out.

Otherwise, if you are a very good entry level consultant, you may be promoted faster.

As I see it, higher change of being promoted faster from a lower level is better than higher chance of being counseled out from a higher level.

Hi there!

I really really doubt it.

Usually to get a non-entry level role you need to have a had a couple of years experienece in another consulting firm or somewhere in the industry.

Internships are too short to signal to the potential employer that you have acquired senior level skills.

My recommendation would be to contact the recruiter of your target firms and discuss your profile with them. Then ask them specifically for their advice on what position would suit you best. That's what HR is meant to do - advise you through this process - so make sure that you leverage them as best as you can.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

Quite simply, no.

Entry-level is for anyone with less than 4 years of work experience.

Sounds like you have 0 years and 0 months of actual work experience (internship doesn't count).

You will be joining at entry-level if you are applying out of your undergraduate degree and/or have less than 4 years work experience.

Hi there,

usually not possible - without any full-time experience / a PhD, you will typically calibrated to entry level roles across most Tier 2 firms. For non-strat consulting firms, they might, at times, give you a slightly higher entry tenure. I have seen that on occation, but again, that's typically not strategy consulting then.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Andi

Hi,

No, internship experience doesn't count as actual work tenure that is used to assess/place you in a position.

It won't work with Tier 2 as well.

If you've done an internship, it means you are still / have just completed your education and hence only qualify for entry level.

All the best!

Hi, I confirm no firm considers internships as months of seniority. You have to apply for entry-level analyst positions.

It is very unlikely that you will be granted seniority for an internship, so most likely you will have to start from an entry-level position, regardless of the firm.

Good luck!
