Bain ACI R1

When applying for an Associate Consultant Intern position, should I expect to be rejected if I did poorly on the live business case but did okay on the market sizing and behavioral interview?

Hi there,

It depends on the degree of "poor" you're referring to as it's quite subjective. Bain looks at the whole picture, and plenty of people move forward even if one part wasn’t perfect. Market sizing and behavioral strength definitely help. At this point the best move is to wait and see how the full evaluation balances out.

They are expecting strong performances, so being just "ok" isn't enough anyway.

But let's assume you had a strong performance on the market sizing and behavioral interview, but just average on the business case... then that could be enough to get the internship offer.

Note: also most people are "okay" at the market sizing and behavioral. To be honest, it's a shame, because with good targeted preparation, those are the parts of the interview that are not that difficult to improve and where one can really do a great job.

Hi there,

It is all relative... It depends a lot on how you did in the various parts vs. other candidates. Hence it is really hard to tell. What you think might not went as well as you'd like, might turn out to be okay.

Regardless how you feel about your performance, before you are notified, what you can do is just to focus on what you have control, e.g., continue to prep for other upcoming interviews (if any), or continue to develop relevant skills.

Best,

Emily

hey there :)

Bain’s R1 evaluation weighs the live business case heavily, but strong performance on market sizing and behavioral can still help. If the case went poorly, there’s a risk of rejection, but it’s not automatic, sometimes they look at overall potential, academic background, and fit. Be honest in reflection emails if they allow follow-up, and focus on improving for future rounds.

best, Alessa :)

It's hard to tell because your perception gets in the way, but also because you're not expected to do perfectly on everything.

The only thing you can do on this one is wait and then ask for feedback, regardless of the result.

Best,
