Hello all.

I am a recent Australian grad who got an offer for Operations at KPMG and was wondering if it would be possible to move into T2/MBB in the long term? Would I be best to accept this or try work as an engineer then do an MBA?

Hey, Its very hard to give pointed advice just based on your 3 sentence question. Broadly, if you tick the boxes- good experience to demonstrate consulting skills, CV, referral etc then I dont see why moving to MBB/T2 ... (read entire answer)

How to approach an operational case

operating costs operational efficiency Operational Excellence operations operations cases operations strategy
Most recent answer on Apr 21, 2021

Here is an operational case with a very open question. In a cleaning company we have several business lines where one is floor cleaning, one is office cleaning, one is industrial cleaning. Each business line has a team of people who are assigned to different sites depending on the demand for services.

The operations manager doesn't know whether the best way to manage capacity is to have one manager for the staffing of each line or to have a team of cross line managers to manage the assignments for any of the lines.

What is the best way to manage capacity to match demand, a shared pool or independent line management?

Hello! First of all, this is not the type of case that you would find in a MBB or strategy consulting in general interview. Furthermore, why don´t you post your suggestions, and ask for feedback from the community? ... (read entire answer)

How to deal with operations cases ?

    IT Strategy operations operations strategy
Most recent answer on Aug 23, 2019

Hello,

I've seen cases being given - also in MBB firms - that are very operational, who deal with IT Operations for example. I was wondering what would be the best way to structure these, as they don't look like typical strategy problems ?

One example: Our client is the CEO of a large insurance company who acquired a smaller insurance company. Both have their own IT systems and they want to harmonize them. It has been estimated by their IT service provider that it would take 18 months, but this is unacceptably long for the CEO. He has reached out to us to help them do it faster.

How would you go about structuring and solving this kind of problem ? This was actually given at the last round in a MBB.

Thanks !

Hello Anonymous A, The good thing about structured methodological approaches is that they can be applied to any problem in any subject area. You can proceed in the same structured way in an operative case as in a stra ... (read entire answer)

McKinsey Operations application process: numbers and differences

BCG McKinsey and Bain Mckinsey operations operations
Most recent answer on Aug 03, 2019

Hey Everyone,

After some convoluted referral process, I got approached by the McKinsey Operations EMEA recruiter, who seemed to really like my profile and reckons I'd be an excellent fit for the product development division (which sounds very interesting, but I have no experience in that?! I have a doctorate in engineering from a top university though).
As I am preparing for other strategy firms (for strategy roles), I wanted to ask what are the critical differences in the cases. I have so far experienced mixed reviews but practicing cases labeled as 'operations', I am not sure I see any significant difference in the approach.
A second question refers to the numbers: I know operations is growing fast, yet there are far fewer applicants than for pure strategy. Does anyone have some hard numbers on the acceptance rate in operations?

Finally, McK has offered me some coaching ahead of the first phone case interview in a few weeks' time. How does this phone interview differ from the others? I know it is a single case, I am not sure I feel very comfortable having to play my chances in a single case interview without the chance to make it up in the following case.

Thank you!
C

Hi, 1) I believe it's hard to find the acceptance rate, but the approach to interviewing is very similar. You will have both classic and ops cases. I would assume that the chances are very similar to the generalist ... (read entire answer)

    Strategy vs Operations Cases

    operations pricing strategy
Recent activity on May 01, 2019

When setting up your structure, how should you approach operations cases (and pricing cases) versus more traditional strategy cases (market/product entry, profitability, M&A, etc)? Should you approach them differently? Thanks!

Hi! In essence, operations cases should be tackled just as profitability cases. Both belong to the same category of situations, i.e., diagnostic scenarios. (and by the way, these diagnostic scenarios are very different ... (read entire answer)

Do BCG Knowledge Experts get paid similarly to BCG generalist ?

    BCG knowledge operations
Recent activity on Feb 08, 2019

I am currently running for a Senior Knowledge Analyst role at Madrid office (but working in a global environment, mainly with London and Munich offices). My profile could be summarized as follows: 5 years of experience in the related field, PMP certification and currently enrolled in an MBA at a top tier Business School. I am aware that the standard salary post-MBA within BCG is around €75K (Madrid office) but I am not sure if for a Senior Knowledge Analyst salary could be similar or not. Any advice is more than welcome!

    What are typical Operations Cases?

    Cases MBB operations ops problems
Recent activity on Jan 10, 2019

Good day! I am preparing for MBB interviews and I have done numerous strategic cases with increasing success. However, I rarely find cases that focus around operations problems. I understand that this is an area that has been growing in relevance for MBB firms, hence I would like to include such operations problems into my preparation. The question is - what are the different types of operations problems I could expect in a case interview?

Thank you!

Hi Anonymous, well - in principle, "Operations" transform resources (or data inputs) into desired goods, services, or results, hence creating value to recipients (mostly: customers). Two or more connected operations c ... (read entire answer)

    Structure for Increasing/Evaluating Production Capacity

    manufacturing operations
Recent activity on Jul 18, 2018

Hi all - I realize I'm asking fairly generic questions here and these would certainly need to be blended into the fabric of the specific case, however, would love to solicit your ideas on a typical case on production/manufacturing.

1. How would we structure a production capacity problem, what are some key elements to consider? (let's say in a case where current production is not meeting demand)

2. What are some of the things we'd do to evaluate current capacity?

3. What ways would we increase capacity?

Thanks!!
