A referral does matter quite a lot (even though it’s not a golden ticket), and that is true for any consulting company, anywhere. In practice, it helps your CV get attention and be looked at more carefully.

Also, not all referrals are equal. A strong, credible referral (someone who knows you and can vouch for you) carries much more weight than a generic one.

If you want, feel free to DM me to discuss smart ways to secure referrals, happy to discuss.

Franco

Yes, a referral definitely matters for screening. London is one of the busiest and most competitive offices in Europe, and often the main one where you can work purely in English, so the applicant pool is very broad. Because of that volume, a referral mainly helps ensure your CV is actually reviewed carefully rather than filtered early.

In my view, if you want solid expectations of at least reaching the online assessment/chatbot stage, the referral should ideally come from someone at Project Leader (Manager equivalent), Principal, or Partner level. Referrals from junior consultants still help, but more senior sponsors tend to carry more weight.

That said, a referral gets you attention, not a pass. Your profile still needs to stand on its own.

Short answer yes. Not just for London but for any office.

Most major firms have an internal referral system that is incentivized to bring the right candidates through the pipeline. A referral does not guarantee an interview but it usually means your CV actually gets read rather than sitting in the general applicant pool. That alone is a meaningful edge given the large pipeline for most major firms.

Regardless of company and role, a referral always matters. Trust is a hard thing to build and when you are referred by someone there is in built trust in you (assuming they are held in good standing).

That being said there are many levels of being referred. The least impactful is to enter your name into the referral database - that takes 2 mins and has a very minimal impact. The most impactful referral is where someone takes time to find the right person (e.g., the hiring manager) to speak to about your profile and what makes you a stand out candidate. That type of referral has the highest pay off from a job perspective.

All the best in your recruitment process,

Hi there,

Yes. Greatly. The general rule is the higher the level, the more the impact (this is particularly true for Partner). Diversification is key here...the only "downside" is time spent. The upside is a referral. Cast the net wide.

Bonus tip: Don't forget to "play tag" across calls. This minimizes the amount of cold messaging you have to do.

Good luck!

Yes, but less than people assume.

A referral at BCG London gets your CV viewed, adds a credibility signal if the referrer is senior, and can flag you as a priority in a high-volume pool.

What it doesn't do. Bypass the bar. A weak CV with a referral still gets rejected. A strong CV without one still gets through.

The seniority of the referrer matters. A Partner endorsement carries weight. A casual LinkedIn referral adds little.

Best move. Apply through the portal and chase a referral in parallel.

Good luck.
