Received a "Keep in Touch" email right after my 1st interview. Could it be an automated rejection or just a system coincidence?

I just finished my first-round interview and have a second one pending. Shortly after the interview, I received a "Keep in Touch" email.

I was previously enrolled in the "A Place for You – Women" initiative, but that program actually concluded last week. Since the initiative is over, I am worried that this email isn't related to that program, but rather a sign that my first-round interview didn't go well and the upcoming second round might be at risk.

Does McKinsey send these "Keep in Touch" emails as a standard automated follow-up to candidates in the pipeline, or could this be a delayed notification from the finished program? I’m trying to figure out if I should stay optimistic for my next round or if this is a subtle "soft rejection."

Hi,

If it were a rejection email, it would usually be quite clear that they are referring to the interview process. Since, from what I understand, that does not seem to be the case here, it is probably related to the A Place For You program instead.

In this situation, the best thing to do is simply send a short email to your recruiting contact to clarify the situation directly. There's no risk.

Hope it helps.

Hi,

I really wouldn’t read too much into that email.

McKinsey sends a lot of automated “keep in touch” emails, especially if you were part of programs like “A Place for You.” In many cases, those emails are completely unrelated to interview outcomes.

Also, if your second round is still pending, that’s the signal that matters most.

A rejection is usually communicated much more directly through HR or the portal, not through a vague recruiting email.

I know it’s easy to overanalyze these things after interviews, but I’d stay focused on preparing for the next round rather than trying to decode automated emails.

Good Luck!

Best,

Soheil

Hey Carla!

It’s almost always just a system coincidence. McKinsey’s KIT emails run on a separate track from interview decisions, and they often go out while candidates are still in process. It doesn’t signal rejection, and it doesn’t affect your second round. If you were in a program before, it’s very likely a delayed or automated touchpoint from that list. Stay focused on the next interview; nothing about this email changes your status.

Hi Carla,

I wouldn't read into it. It could be a plain mistake, or it could indeed have to do with the programme that you finished and which now automatically enrols you in Keep in Touch.

They always finish a round of interviews before communicating any decision, positive or negative.

Best of luck with the upcoming interview!

The timing here actually suggests it's program-related, not a rejection.

McKinsey sends KIT emails through two channels. Program-related KIT goes to candidates enrolled in initiatives like "A Place for You - Women" after the program ends, it's administrative, not tied to interview performance. Process-related KIT is the soft rejection one, but it's almost never sent between interview rounds. It comes after the final decision, not while you're still active.

Your situation strongly looks like program-related. You're still active with a second round pending. McKinsey doesn't send rejection signals to candidates they're about to interview again. The timing aligns with the program ending, not with an interview decision point.

What to do. Don't read it as rejection. Prep hard for round 2, the interviewers won't know or care about the email. If you're really uncertain, drop your recruiter a short note asking if the email is tied to the Women's initiative close-out.

Don't spiral. The data here fits a program touchpoint, not a soft rejection.

Good luck for round 2.
