Haven't heard back from McKinsey and Bain in US (applied 2 months ago) . Should I apply to Singapore/London/India/Dubai?

    COVID location MBB
Most recent answer on Jan 22, 2021

Please note I am also actively looking for case coaches. ( I am in EST)

Hello Guys,

Context :

I am a recent MBA graduate and couple of my potential interviews at Tier-2 Consulting firms fell through during the pandemic. As I am an international student in the US it is getting very tough for me to get interviews given the current social unrest and COVID-19. I have researched more than 250 consulting firms and applied to the ones that fit my interest and skills. I applied to MBB with referrals from Managers-Directors. But haven't heard back from McKinsey and Bain and got rejected from BCG after I took the first round-Pymetrics test. I am still a fresh a MBA graduate and not an Industry hire and it's getting tough for me to explain this situation to recruiters. I am committed to consulting and have done more than 70 cases. I have now given up on a future with MBB in the US and I am willing to work in pre-dominantly english speaking countries such as Singapore/ London /Dubai and India (Native). I have experince as a Venture Capital fellow, worked in a Multi-Family Office ( $10-$15 B AUM) , Consulitng ( FMCG + Insurance) and Chemical Manufacturing Industry. I am tired of the H1B sponsorship based rejections, bias towards US citizens vs International students in the US and other irrelevant nationality based factors that HR professionals in some firms use to sort out candidates.

Questions -

I'll like to know from you

1) Which countries I should target for MBB + (Tier 2) except USA ?

2) Should I change my location preference in my active existing application at McKinsey and Bain to the aforementioned Countries ? ( Pros vs Cons)

3) Should I re-apply to BCG in Non-US countries ?

4) I also have referrals from Roland Berger (EM) , ZS (Consultant), Strategy& (Alum), Deloitte (M.D), EY-Parthenon (M.D) all in the US. But no interview luck so far as the hiring is very low. I am not sure how long can I wait ? Clock is ticking as the H1B sponsorship date is coming close and I am committed to consulting. Has anyone had luck with these firms in the US recently through the Industry hire route in the US ?

Thanky you in advance.

Most recent answer on Jan 07, 2021

Hi everyone,

is there anyone who can tell me the main differences in terms of :

- most served industries

-most frequent types of projects

-geographical locations where projects take place

among MBB (in particular as regards the Milan office)?

Thank you very much

Hi all, I have limited experience with the Milano Office at Bain, i.e. never worked there personally but worked with Bain colleagues from that office. As you know, Bain Italy, as of a couple of years ago was a separat ... (read entire answer)

Can I apply to multiple offices for second tier firms?

    2-tier Application location
Most recent answer on Dec 17, 2020

Can I apply to multiple offices of firms such as Deloitte, A.T.Kearney, Simon Kucher, Roland Berger, Oliver Wyman .... in order to maximize my chances of getting an offer?

(of course I am native speaker or fluent to the offices I am conisder and I have no need of Visa)

The answer is company specific, but as a general rule, no not really. The international firms you mention have typucally developed HR systems that will cross check your application with other offices.

Can we change the office that we applied to?

    Application location office preferences
Most recent answer on Nov 08, 2020

Dear all,

I recently applied to some consulting firms and while I was fortunate enough to receive interviews, I have regrets on putting my first choice office as my second choice (due to visa issues). Is it possible to request for a change? Thank you

Feel free to reach out to HR and explain exactly why you want to change the options around. It should be doable if you are right about visa or they might say that you will be ok regardless

Is it difficult to transfer from Italy to other locations within BCG?

    BCG location transfer
Most recent answer on Aug 31, 2020

I got an offer to join BCG as a VA in Italy. I would like to be able to continue my career also outside Italy and therefore transfer maybe to the ME or anywhere else in the world. Do you know whether is it easy to do so? How are the BCG exit packages designed?

Hi Anonymous, this was my experience based on working in the Milan office: Many new graduates leave either after 2 years (pre MBA) or after 5-6 years after joining (including the MBA time or Senior Associate time ... (read entire answer)

Which office to choose given one "is excited about you"?

    BCG Bain McKinsey location recruiting
Most recent answer on May 24, 2020

I was wondering how one would handle the following situation: A large MBB office near your current location has shown great interest, invited you to apply/interview, offered tons of resources, but you are contemplating going to an office in another location for various reasons (want to live there, SO, expertice of office etc.). To be clear, its not that the office that showed interest is one you would hate, just slightly less preferred based purely on where you want to live.

Would chances of success be impacted by your choice?

Thanks!

Hi there, The chances of success indeed could be a bit different from office to office. Odds at locations short of talent supply (usually they would be a lot enthusiastic) would be better. Now the question is how ... (read entire answer)

    ATK location choice in US

    ATKearney location North America
Most recent answer on Apr 11, 2020
    Anonymous A asked on Sep 22, 2019

Now this is a somewhat generic question but here we go: Does anyone have any location-specifics about ATK in the US? I know SFO is focused on tech, NY likely more PE work, and CHI lots of automotive/sourcing etc. How about the Atlanta office? Anyone know whether these offices are growing or shrinking? And given the option to pick your location, what should be more important: the practice I want to focus on and have access to the higher leadership of that practice or where I want to live? Thanks!

MBB Dubai vs Amsterdam vs Copenhagen

amsterdam location MBB Middle East western europe
Most recent answer on Jan 04, 2020

Hi, I am an American (froma target school) looking to gain international experience (3-5 years) before I head back to the US and help my Dad expand his business. I have been travelling around the world since my graduation few months ago. I really liked all the three cities (Dubai, Amsterdam and Copenhagen) and couldn't rank the preference in terms of lifestyle. So I'd like to know the pros and cons of these regions in terms of interview process and later working at MBB.

Thank you!

Hello! In a McKinsey women meeting I met people from these 3 locations. A priori, I tought that the Copenhagen office would have a better lifestyle -and indeed, it was better than Spain-, but it was still hard! Not ... (read entire answer)

Which Bain office should I apply to in the US?

    Bain location
Most recent answer on Sep 17, 2019

Hi, I'm an undergrad from a target school in the US. I was wondering which Bain locations I should apply to. I know they say that all locations have a similar chance of acceptance but I definitely think the more popular the office, the harder (more competitive) it is to get in.

I'm thinking whether I should skip applying to the NY office as my first choice since it's gonna be super super competitive there. My remaining top choice is Toronto. I'm open to any location in the US.

Does anyone know how competitive the Toronto office is? What are some smaller but less competitive offices to apply to, which also have a decent amount of PE work?

Hi, How "competitive" each office is is very hard to establish (I would say that only the US recruiting manager would have the data on it), so I would stop thinking about the question this way. Also, if you are good en ... (read entire answer)

    Geographic Location

location office preferences phone screen relocation
Recent activity on Dec 24, 2018

Hi,

I applied to McKinsey with geographic location preferences as follows: Geneva, Paris, Dubai and Casablanca.

I was called for a phone screening by the Casablanca office - does that mean that my other preferences will be disregarded and I am only considered for the Casablanca office?

Also, when I take the interviews, do the office benchmark you against other candidates that applied to the same office or to the global candidate pool?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

If you're open to all offices in a country when applying, how do they decide which one you will go to?

Application application process DACH germany home office interview process location MBB
Recent activity on Sep 24, 2018

I know a lot of people tend to have a specific city/office location they apply to, but what happens to those of us who are more country-specific and not city-specific?

For most firms (including all MBB I believe) in Germany you can choose your top 3 city choices, or just check 'Munich' if you are open to all cities. I am open to all of the cities these firms have offices in, except one or two.

From what I've heard, for interviewing generally the first round happens in one of two offices (depending what part of the country you're from), and then the second round happens in the office of your choice (presumably to check for fit within the office itself).

Can anyone shed any light on that? Would I ultimately have the decision of which city (or a pick between two where they needed more staff), or would it be more, "Okay, you passed round one, we need more staff in city Xxxx so we will send you there."?

Thanks in advance!

This will be largely country+company specific, but I'd expect you will generally end up in scenario 2: They need consultants in one city more than in the others, so there you go. Have you actually asked the recruiting ... (read entire answer)

Applied to BCG London as first choice but got interview for second choice. Does anyone know how the BCG office preference system works? Do you only get considered for second choice if your first choice rejects you? If let's say I got the offer for the second choice location would it be possible to negotiate for a transfer?
