MSBA UCLA for Management Consulting

analytics and Bain Bain BCG business analyst Master MBB McKinsey non-MBA The Boston Consulting Group
Most recent answer on Jun 20, 2021

Hi everyone,

I want to pursue a career in management consulting and am currently deciding wether or not to enroll in a Master in Business Analytics (I can't pursue an MBA now, because of missing full-time experience, but would consider to pursue an MBA degree in a couple of years). My ultimate career goal is to land a job at MBB, however, Strategy&, Parthenon etc. are also great options I would be more than satisfied with.

My profile:

Male in early twenties from Germany (it's usual in Germany to pursue a Masters degree before joying a management consultancy)

Strong undergraduate (GPA conversion to US Scale 4.0/4.0) in Economics and Business Administration from a German target university

GMAT Score 720

Internships: Inhouse Consulting (Digital Transformation) for the largest European Bank; Inhouse Consulting (Top Management/Strategy) for world's largest FMCG company; Accenture Technology Strategy Consulting

My question is:

Should I enroll in the MS in Business Analytics at UCLA ? I am definitely highly interested in Data Science and related skills, but don't want to pursue a pure data science career. One of the biggest advantages is that the MS comes with a 3 year working visa for the US. I always wanted to work in the states, especially in California. As far as I can tell, most of alumni from MSBA at UCLA pursue careers in Data Science now. Some at consultancies like BCG Gamma, however, I am interested in their generalist track.

Another option I have is a Master in Management at London Business School which places quite good into consulting at MBB. However, I would not have the option to live in the states which I always dreamed of.

THANK YOU so much for your help!!! Best regards!

BCG Boston Consulting Group MBB The Boston Consulting Group
Most recent answer on Apr 30, 2021

Dear All,

I recently practiced the BCG Problem solving computer-based test (Greece Tourism). It has 23 questions that can be done in 45 mins. Every correct answer gets 3 points while the wrong answer -1.

I am wondering what is the minimum score to pass this screening approximately? It will be helpful to know this to help my preparation guide. Thank you so much

Note: Although, I am also aware that in some regions they might use online case screening. But it's still nice to get some benchmark on the minimum score of this type of screening

Hi there, The rumored passing score is 70% of the total (approximately 48 points). If you want to practice more on a real example of a BCG Potential Test, you can find the one I published below: https://www.preplo ... (read entire answer)

Dear All,

I am wondering as an experienced candidate who also has got master's degree (Not MBA) and applying for an entry-level position at MBB.

Will they expect us to be better at case Interview ? or

Will Our professional experience help to compensate for some of the aspects of performance in the case interview that are not really great (not terrible performance)? In other words, because we have got more credential than other entry-level candidates, they will excuse little bit if our case performance has some weakness. I am not saying that I will rely on my credential to relax on my case prep but just curious about this condition.

Also, how can we leverage our experience for entry level position ?

Thank you

Re-Applying to MBB after Round 1 Internship Rejection (MBA)

Bain M7 MBA reapply The Boston Consulting Group
Most recent answer on Jan 16, 2021

I'm a first year student at an M7. I had my Round 1 interviews with 2 MBBs (Bain & BCG) and I didn't make it to Round 2. I had an off day (both were on the same day) and I couldn't perform as well as I knew I could.

Do I have a shot at re-applying for full time? I had heard that if you can't hack Round 1, it doesn't look good but I'm hoping there's more to the story. If it is an uphill battle, what can I do to maximize my chances of getting a second shot?

    BCG Office Transfer after Internship?

Most recent answer on Dec 30, 2020

Hi all,

I hope you are all doing well.

I am a masters students in the UK. I was wondering, if I were to join MBB as an intern in my home country (southern Europe), and perform up to standard, would it be possible to join full-time in London at the end of the internship? I am not fussed about the location at the moment, but long-term that is where I envision living, as I spent 6 years here and all my loved ones are based there.

If it matters, I am a dual citizen and have a UK passport too.

Hi there, From a risk perspective I would highly advise against this. Each region has a stake in their interns and invest a lot of time/money in filtering out/recruiting you. I would highly advise that you look to con ... (read entire answer)

How to Answer "Why Consulting?" in Interviews

AT Kearney Bain BCG consulting FIT McKinsey PEI The Boston Consulting Group why consulting
Most recent answer on Oct 22, 2020
Anonymous gave the best answer on Oct 04, 2017

Hi. This may seem trivial in the grand scheme of things when it comes to a case interview - but I wonder what are interviewers' expectations of answers to the "Why consulting" & "Why McKinsey/BCG/Bain" questions?

1. How long & specific/vivid should an answer be?

2. Should it be answered in a structured manner as well; i.e. "There are X reasons why I choose consulting / MBB.... First is .... Second is .... "?

3. Other things that need to be considered when answering these questions.

Thank you!

I would recommend spending about 1 - 2 minutes on each question. You have a lot to get to in the interview. Less than a minute will make you seem rehearsed and shallow and more than 2 minutes for each will take up too m ... (read entire answer)

Should I wait to apply for a Summer internship if I applied to a FT role last year?

business analyst Mckinsey internship Summer Internship The Boston Consulting Group
Most recent answer on Oct 20, 2020

A brief background: I am 2 years out of undergrad working in Tier 2 firm as a technical consultant and pursuing a part time masters in Computer Science from a Top 10 (but non target) school. Undergrad was a non target in CS with a very low GPA. To prove to myself I can perform well academically and override my GPA for MBB or an MBA, I decided to pursue a master's while working.

Not knowing much about management consulting, I unfortunately applied with a sub-par application for FT enty level to McKinsey and BCG last year. Which were rejected during screening process.

Would I be within the cool-off period to apply for a Summer internship (and finish master's full time)?

Or at this point, would it be better for me to wait after graduation and apply FT (potentially better application with promotion/full grad transcripts).
