MBB application success chance without MBA

    BIG3 MBA
Most recent answer on Jun 06, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

I’d like to ask for advice regarding the possibility to switch to MBB. I’ve been living and working in CIS, now I’m considering opportunities to change jobs and move to Europe.

Short background:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Economics with honors from #1 University in Russia (high quality education, strong emphasis on quants)

Work experience:

9+ yrs working experience – in audit function, 3 yrs in Big4, remaining - in internal audit in financial sector (local holding, #1 on the local market).

Holder of professional certifications: ACCA, CIA – fully complete, membership obtained + in progress: FRM

Why I want to shift to MBB:

I’ve always been interested in consulting mainly due to diversity of clients and projects (during my time in Big4 I audited clients in oil&gas, transportation, construction, etc + now added financial sector). At this moment my job seems to have ran out of challenging projects, so I want to try something new.

Fast paced environment where I can constantly learn and interact with a lot of people suits me perfectly.

My current company is a long-term client of Big3 with a wide range of projects (strategy, risks, hr, etc) and I participated in communication with consultants, review of the presentations, etc from the client side. So, I have a feeling of how it works.

Challenges:

I don’t have an MBA, and just by looking at company names, my CV does not seem “catchy”.

I can obtain an MBA if necessary – the program is not difficult for me considering strong Bachelor’s degree+professional certifications+work experience, however full-time MBA will leave me without a job for 1-2 yrs, and an executive MBA is too costly.

Considering all of the above, kindly ask you to advise me on my chances to be recruited without an MBA (might get an executive MBA later in case I get accepted to consulting firm). I’m not a fresh graduate and very time conscious now, so the perspective of becoming a consultant at 35 (in case with obtaining MBA prior to applying to MBB) is not an option for me:)

Hi there, You can definitely apply without an MBA – there are zero downsides compared to not applying at all. Worst case, you may opt for an MBA if you get rejected. Given you lack strong brand names in the CV, I be ... (read entire answer)

Is there international travel in consulting?

    BIG3 International Travel
Most recent answer on Apr 30, 2021

Hello!

I was wondering if consultants (especially those starting off their career at a Big 3 firm) travel internationally. My theory as well was that consultants in Europe might do so a bit more since countries are closer to one another, whereas a consultant in the US might just travel domestically.

Hey there, Answer from McK perspective. McK has a global staffing model and there is tons of travel (German office). At the peak, I had weeks with 6 flights...usual week was 2 flights (Sun/Mon to Thurs) if staffed in ... (read entire answer)

What to wear to the office as a woman?

    Advice BIG3 Personal
Most recent answer on Apr 22, 2021

Hi!

As an intern, in a hot, humid city, what do you recommend to wear to the office? I have a basically empty business wardrobe. Here are some of the questions going through my mind:

Would you stay away from using colors that aren't neutral (your typical beige, navy, black, white)?

Shirts/dresses lenght?

Shoes wise, do they have to be heels? If so, how high?

If the weather is hot, would it be okay not to wear a blazer?

Bags-wise, do you have to wear a shoulder bag that's big? (big enough to fit a computer for work?) or is a cross body bag good enough?

Please feel free to add any advice/tips outside the questions I listed above. And if you have any clothing store suggestions, please let me know!!

Thank youu!!

Hello! Congrats on the offer! I laughed seeing your question, since I had a call with a friend in McKinsey just before joining for the same topic, I needed urgently to go shopping since my business waredrobe was non ... (read entire answer)

So I have a major concern that I beleive it will come up during my interview at MBB firms. I currently have 1.5 years of experince at one the big four (Strategy consultanting department) and I am still not sure how can I convince MBB firms of my intentions to jump the ship.

I love consulting in general, the only answer I could think of is that MBB firms are the best when it comes to consulting and I would love to enchance my knowledge and increase my learning curve at MBB.

It's always best to not avoid answering the question in your answer. Some things that make the most sense Better opportunities - larger clients, more diverse work, greater opportunities to learn from both within MBB ... (read entire answer)

Hi all,

I would like some advice in creating a good application for MBB that will be selected for an interview. I have been applying for jobs for a year and a half and I just managed to get a 18-month contract. My problem is that for all the jobs I have been applying, I did not even get called for an inteview, although I had various career advisors help me with my CV. Many people have said that since I live in the UK and an am an EU citizen, the Brexit might have made it difficult for me to find a job.

As I am currently on an 18-month contract, I would like to start working on my application soon, and working for MBB is my goal.

Without further ado, I will just tell you a bit about myself, and hope you can advise me on what should I focus on my application.

I have a BSc (Hons.) in Computer Science, and MSc in Information Security and Biometrics, and I am currently awaiting to defend my PhD thesis. My PhD is in Electronic Engineering, focusing on humanoid robots. I worked on implementing locomotion and manipulation algorithms for humanoid robots, and have experience in control, kinematics, mechatronics. I am currently doing an online course offered by the University of Pennsylvania on Intellectual Property Law.

Throughout my studies, I have worked on different projects. I had my first intern position during my undergraduate, and was working as a resercher in biometrics. I was the team leader for a group of students, and our results ended with 3 publications in an IEEE conference. After that I had various research positions in biometrics and healthcare robotics, I was a teaching assistant at the University of Kent, as well as an Academic Ambassador.

I also do a lot of volunteering work, and I spend most of my free time promoting engineering to schools. I have developed various activities that can be used to teach engineering to children, and I am also working with some companies in the UK to promote STEM. I have been involved in organising conferences. The biggest event I organised took place in 15 countries during one week. I judge for various competitions and awards, and I have also received awards for my work.

Despite all of these, I find it very difficult to get shortlisted for interviews, so it would be very helpful to have some advice from people who work for MBB or who have been through this process before.

Kind regards,

Iulia

Hey Iulia, I understand how frustrating your current situation can look like, but unfortunately getting MBBs is a really competitive process and there's no way everyone can even get shortlisted for an interview (belie ... (read entire answer)

BIG3 Case Case Interview Top tier
Recent activity on Mar 07, 2018

Hello, dear consultants!

I've applied to the top tier consulting company and got an invitation for the writing case. I explored all examples on the official web site and found out that it's quite a difficult challenge for me. Could anybody share your experience with me? On average, case includes 60-70 pages of text and graphs about the company. I'm expected to prepare 4 slides drawn with my hands for 1 hour. What are the main tips for this stage? Should I draw slides with the information from the case or should I invent something new?

Thank you!

Hi Sergey, The usual steps to follow in a written case are: 1. Learn how to define a plan of action and stick to that 2. Practice graph interpretation 3. Work on quick reading and quick understanding of key info ... (read entire answer)
