Success stories for hope

Hi all,

i’m waiting for a decision from mckinsey after my final round. Its been a few days of waiting and i‘m getting more anxious as the days go by. I would appreciate it if you guys can humor me by telling your success stories in applying to consulting firms and taking a while to hear back and get an offer or thinking you bombed your final round and got an offer.

thanks!

McKinsey Senior EM & BCG Consultant | Interviewer at McK & BCG for 7 years | Coached 400+ candidates secure MBB offers

Hi!

Well, one of my mentees didn't hear back for almost a week after interviewing with an MBB in the Middle East, and then received a rejection email from recruiting. But the next day he was called by a Partner who congratulated him on his full time offer! There had been a mix up in the handover between recruiters and interviewers, leading to a very long waiting time and an erroneous rejection email.

Moral of the story: there is ALWAYS hope! :-P

Cheers, Sidi

Hi there,

I exited my BCG second round interview thinking I most likely at least partially bombed it.

Evidently not :)

Keep it up! You really CANNOT fully judge in all fairness

Hi there,

I know people who received rejection after rejection (10 firms), only to get their 11th and final interview offer.

I personally failed in undergrad (applied to BCG and wasn't invite to interview), only to land the role 6 years later.

Plenty of success stories…and it may not be just for being called back by McKinsey…as in, expand your time horizon for “hope” :)

Hi there,

think most of us here have experienced case interview performances that did not go perfect - i'd even say it's the norm. So suggest you lean back and take it as it comes.

Wish you all the best.

Hi there!

I felt like I failed my final round.

Then waited for about 10 days until they called me.

I had rejected all the previous offers before McKinsey, so it was this or nothing at all.

Those 10 days were very long.

Stay strong. And hopefully they'll call really soon.

And if you want to keep yourself busy, sharing below with you two articles about how to make the most of your first year in consulting:

Hey there,

I definitely thought I bombed the last of 3x Partner interviews at McKinsey! I felt terrible throughout the interview and couldn't really put my finger on it.

Turns out the guy was just playing bad-cop (which they shouldn't and without a good-cop present…) and we became good friends after.

Hang in there, keeping my fingers crossed!

Hello,

Hang in there! I know the wait is anxiety-inducing, but this is truly a case of you don’t know/can’t assume anything until you get the call from them. There are plenty of reasons for why there might be a delay, from slow bureaucracy/paperwork to interviews for other candidates doing other rounds getting pushed back. So try not to assume anything at this stage. Fingers crossed you’ll back from them soon!

Thank you for your reply. During on cycle recruiting, do they compare candidates with one another even though they have different interviewers?

It will depend by region/office and number of people they are looking to hire during the cycle.
