McKinsey Imbellus Test invite (confused)

Hello!

This is about the McKinsey London, UK office.

McKinsey London says they look for a minimum of AAB at A Levels (end of High school official exams) and a 2:1 grade for your university degree.

I’m rather confused as I got BCC for my A Levels (yes they’re awful but I had major extenuating circumstances) and am currently completing a bachelors degree in a STEM subject at a great university in the UK (one of the top 10s but not a target school).

I applied for the McKinsey summer internship as a business analyst a few months back. I was invited to do the imbellus test which I assumed everyone received. I didn’t know there were A Level minimums although it was common sense to assume they’re looking for the best of the best so I wasn’t surprised to see that there was a minimum for A Levels.

However, after searching online and on this website, people are saying that only some people are invited to do the imbellus test and people are congratulating for making it past the CV/cover letter screening. I should have been rejected straight away then and not received the invite considering my grades? Is this not the case then? I mean I did get rejected straight after the imbellus test but I assumed everyone was invited to do the test.

Does everyone applying to the London form get the test then? The reason I ask as I was going to apply for their graduate position next year but seeing the AAB, I thought it would lead to an automatic rejection.

Extra info: My CV is great and my cover letter was nothing extraordinary. Just a normal cover letter. My CV had drastically changed since applying a few months back (summer internship at a big name, awards, consulting experience, etc, which I didn’t have on my CV before).

My CV also didn’t include my grades at all. I know in the application it did ask me so I put them in but I’m not sure if they see the application after and that’s why they rejected me? Or whether they see the application and CV/cover letter before the test.

I was going to email or ask some of my uni alumni who work there whether the A Levels are a requirement or they’re desirable grades but not essential but I felt that a question like that would annoy them (idk it’s nerve wracking making a potentially bad impression).

I was wondering if this is the same with BCG as I received an online assessment after applying too?

There was a document leak a few years back that showed the pre screening of MBBs and they pretty much showed unless you go to a target like Oxford or Cambridge, you need a 1st and a minimum of AAB to pass the initial screening (idk what the initial screening is).

Would be super helpful if all my questions could be answered so I’m no longer confused XD

I know Bain & Company don’t worry about A Levels and they look at everything holistically so will see my circumstances, etc (I know this as I have two friends that work there that I made through my uni alumni/LinkedIn and they asked HR for me).

Hi there,

I doubt it had anything to do with your grades. If you didn't put them on your CV, then it's likely they didn't even see them. I'd rather say that it has to do with how tough firms are with their screening in recent times.

To work against that, you should aim to apply widely and try to get as much interviewing experience as possible before interviewing with your target firms. I wrote a guide that outlines how to develop an application strategy during the present economic period. You can find it below.

And yes, all of my candidates that applied to London received the Imbellus test once they submitted the application.

Best,

Cristian

They see it on the application because they ask for the grades which is what I assumed they initially look at? So if all your students received the imbellus test, it’s safe to assume they give it to everyone and that I most likely did get rejected because of not reaching the AAB threshold? I just don’t know how well I did on the imbellus test so I can’t say for certain. I will definitely email HR and ask but thought I’d ask on here first in case anyone knew. I’ll be applying for quite a few firms for sure (I already have a graduate scheme lined up so it takes the stress away for my final year at university next year but not in my ideal area).

Hello,

The initial application stages (sending in application + test) will vary based on firm/office/role that you are applying for, but in general not all candidates are invited to the online test. So you would have passed some kind of initial step to get to that stage.

My recommendation for you would be as follows. First, figure out whether the A Level grade minimum is a formal requirement, or just recommended/hearsay/you think that's what they are looking for. If it is a formal requirement, it should say so on the application. If it's not clear for whatever reason, reach out to HR at the office you are interested in applying to. It's a totally reasonable question, but more apt for recruiting, rather than alumni.

If it's a formal requirement, then unfortunately there's not much you can do about that - in this case, I would continue applying to other firms. If it's a recommendation but not a formal requirement (which would be my guess, although you never know since these systems often change), then you shouldn't worry about hearsay or leaks or anything like that. If you are already being invited to online tests, it seems like your A Level grades are not a huge deterrent. Keep pursuing networking opportunities and applying. You can't change your A Level grades at this stage, so I would advise you to work as hard as you can with what you have (which it seems like you are doing already). Best of luck!

So based on their website, this is exactly what they wrote: “ We look for minimum qualifications of AAB at A level or equivalent and a 2.1 degree (expected or actual) in any discipline*. As well as listing your academic achievements, please tell us about extracurricular interests such as voluntary work, sporting attainment, musical accomplishment and entrepreneurial activities.” This is the section near the bottom under “what we need from you”: https://www.mckinsey.com/uk/careers I guess if they need it, it’s a requirement? Is it ok to ask a HR member through LinkedIn or is it more professional to ask through email? Thank you! Hopefully it’s not a requirement but there are always other firms

Hi there,

To be honest, this changes by region, role, recruiting channel, and even timing (2022 is different to 2023). In some instances the test is sent as part of the initial screening. In other instances it's sort of a secondary screening.

Look, all you can really do is do your best on these tests right? Instead of spending all this effort trying to figure this out…repurpose that effort to passing those tests!

Additionally, don't count on MBB (never ever count on MBB, even if you're perfect marks Cambridge). Keep networking and applying to other firms.

Here's some reading to help (internship/full time rules are similar here): https://www.preplounge.com/en/articles/how-to-get-a-consulting-internship-tips-and-tricks

Don’t worry not counting on MBB as I know how hard it is to get in as the ideal candidate so someone who’s not will have it a lot harder. I understand that I should focus my energy on prepping but would it not be a waste of time if I’ll get automatically rejected if there is a minimum requirement? Also I applied for the summer internship. Am I banned from applying for the graduate scheme as I heard they don’t let you apply for another 18-24 months?

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the rejection. In terms of your question:

Q: I should have been rejected straight away then and not received the invite considering my grades? Is this not the case then?

They could do CV screening also after the test. When I helped candidates for some business school they told me every person in their cohort got the test after the application.

In your case the rejection might have been due to the test or to the CV, it is difficult to know without more information.

In any case, you can still apply next year, there is no downside with it.

Good luck!

Francesco

Would I not be banned from applying for 18-24 months? I applied for the summer internship which closed in January and offers were given out for the internship a couple of weeks ago. Graduate schemes open around September. Also would it be worth applying if there is a requirement? Is it wise to ask a HR member through LinkedIn?

Francesco on May 05, 2023

Hi Jonathan, the ban is usually 12 to 18 months and the performance of the PSG is valid for 12 months. If they haven’t specified the length of the ban you can clarify with HR. You should satisfy the requirements of the applications and ideally apply with a referral to strengthen the application itself. Hope this helps.
