Hi all,

Just received an invite for this week to have a coffee chat with the head of recruitment at my regional McK office….

I didn't get any formal acceptance or congratulations from the application portal, neither a rejection.

This is what the email read (hidden some details with xxx):

We’re pleased to invite you to interview with the McKinsey XXXX office. As part of next steps, please let me know if you’d be available to meet in-person in xxxx on xxxx.

Objective: Connect in-person, learn more about you and elaborate the recruitment process including timelines….

Does this mean I have landed an official interview with this office? Probably just doubting myself as i didnt think I would make it lol.

ALSO: Any advice on HOW TO PREPARE FOR THIS coffee chat, WHAT TO ASK? What to take, Wearing a full tie suit, WHAT questions to prepare for……Honestly just panicking because i didnt expect it

Thanks in advance, the regular coaches who reply are just world class, you guys solve every problem of mine

Hi there,

Congrats! This is a fantastic opportunity.

Ultimately, think about this more like a screening. I would recommend a 30 min coaching session so that you can REALLY feel comfortable and get all your questions answered and flesh out your preparation (a Q&A doesn't quite do this justice)

To prepare, think through what interests you about the firm and about consulting. Make sure you can talk about yourself/your experiences in a clear, concise, natural manner that sells you.

I would go suit, tie optional (do what makes you feel comfortable).

Think through things you genuinely want to learn.

And, remember, be a person. You've had a million conversations in your life. This is just another! (Easier said than done, I know)

Hi there,

1) Does this mean I have landed an official interview with this office?

If you have applied for a position and not for an event, this could be the first step of the process to understand your motivation.

2) Any advice on how to prepare for this coffee chat

It seems you won’t have any cases at this stage. For the possible fit questions, some of the most common at this stage are the following:

  1. Tell me about yourself
  2. Why consulting
  3. Why McKinsey
  4. Why should we hire you

I don’t think they will ask you PEI questions at this stage, but in case you want to check them, you can find a description below:

▶ 4 PEI Dimensions You Should Know

3) What to ask?

Generally speaking, good questions to ask should:

  1. Not be related to something you could easily find online or that shows you don’t know much about consulting.
  2. Not be related to the firm per se (e.g. how is XYZ at Bain), but to the experience of the person (How did you find XYZ in your experience?).
  3. Be related to a positive experience (i.e. avoid questions related to negative emotions).

You can find some more tips below:

▶ Which Questions Should You Ask in an Interview?

4) Wearing a full tie suit?

I would recommend the same outfit as for the interview (a full tie suit if that's the standard in your country).

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi!

Wow, congrats. That's amazing news.

I read it as an interview invite.

And it sounds like HR wants to get to know you a bit and walk you through the process. These discussions are non-evaluative, but of course, it helps to make a good impression.

Do prepare a list of questions for the discussion. Also, read this guide I put together on how to navigate these conversations:

Good luck! Hope it goes well :)

Hi,

My advices would be:

- to wear a suit without a tie

- prepare good questions to ask

- listen to him/her and use that to create a great conversation

Cheers,

No, it means you are being considered. This is a screening meeting. So you can think of it as a “level 0” interview stage. If you do well, there's a good chance you get the interview.

Hi,

Treat it as a light FIT interview, therefore all the standard FIT preparation advice applies here. Be prepared to tell about yourself and your motivation to join the firm

Good luck!
