First interview HR BCG

Good morning folks,

I sent my application for BCG for a Consultant position (I am an experienced professional), I passed my Online Business Case Assessment and HR just sent me an invitation for a first call.

I don't know what I have to expect, if it would be a “normal” call or a first interview… Some experience?

Hi there!

Even as an experienced hire, for consultant role it is the standard process.
I would recommend you:
1. Understand well the recruiting process of BCG, https://www.preplounge.com/en/articles
2. familiar yourself with the type of cases you can get https://www.preplounge.com/en/bootcamp.php and check cases published on PrepLounge
3. Practice math!
4. Dont learn any framework by hard, understand rather how to structure a problem and form a hypothesis to prove/disprove with an analysis
5. Practice with peers and take a few sessions with a coach, eventually do one diagnostic session to tell you where you stand and what your next steps should be

Feel free to reach out if you need a coach to support you, I am rewarded as a top BCG trainer, training new hires all the consulting skills (including how we create frameworks), as well as experienced coach.

Good luck!
Lucie

Hi there,

Congrats on getting this far!

If the invite is just one 30-60 min slot, it's rather a discussion with the recruiter to understand a bit better your profile and timeline for application. For the first round they usually align with you beforehand and there should be more than one invite.

Still, my recommendation would be to ask the recruiter directly what the call will consist of.

Best,

Cristian

Hi,

First of all, congrats for passing the screening and the online test.

This first call is likely to happen with an HR rep, who will provide you a bit of info about the recruiting process. However, you might be also preliminarly assessed: the interviewer will consider your behaviour/tone of voice/energy level.

This first call is very rarely a show stopper, so I would suggest to start preparing very well for the upcoming interviews.

All the best,

Luca

Congratulations on making it to this point already.

Just remember that you are in a recruiting process now so every interaction will be assessed and evaluated to some extent. I would therefore play it safe. Don't let your guard down when talking to representatives of the firm, even outside of the formal interviews. Be as focused and motivated in the first call as in any interview round.

Best of luck

Hi there,

Congratulations on passing the test. In terms of your question:

Q: I don't know what I have to expect, if it would be a “normal” call or a first interview… Some experience?

The best thing would be to verify that with HR. Usually calls with HR may include:

  • Alignment on the next steps of the process
  • Fit-only interview

With some firms /locations you may have a short case with HR as well but it is not very common.

Good luck!

Hi there,

This is essentially a screening call! You need to check with HR, but, ultimately you should expect a “fit” interview. Meaning, be ready to talk about your background, explain why you're interest in consulting, BCG, etc. Make sure you be professional but personable and demonstrate interest, genuineness, communication, and business capabilities.

Here's a bit more reading on some of the major items to have ready: https://www.preplounge.com/en/tell-me-about-yourself-interview-question

It is a "fit call" where it is important you explain concisely and effectively your CV, your experience, your strengths, and your determination to join the firm.

Prepare yourself to communicate well, with confidence, and ask some questions.

Most likely a fit interview (including understanding your motivation, also to which role and seniority they should assign you) but also taking some time to explain you the recruiting process. In any case, be prepared for a short case.
