I am preparing a story for courageous change - any particular insights or tips for this as this is comparatively a newer dimension?

I know it is about adapting to change and could also include setbacks but are there any particular things I should highlight for this?

Thanks!

Hey there,

McKinsey has started to replace the Entrepreneurial Drive dimension with a new dimension called Courageous Change in a couple of countries. What they want you to talk about is a situation where you faced and maneuvered a significant change or an ambiguous situation, adapting to new circumstances. You need to demonstrate that you

  • are able to quickly adjust to new situations and change your course of action if needed
  • have the resilience to deal with setbacks and stressful environments
  • use challenging situations as a learning and step-up opportunity
  • can act based on limited or ambiguous information that is available to you
  • overcome obstacles or face headwinds along the way by coming up with creative and new ideas or approaches
  • remain positive throughout the whole experience

The new dimension is very similar to Entrepreneurial Drive and most of your content elements overlap.

Hi there,

Q: I am preparing a story for courageous change - any particular insights or tips for this as this is comparatively a newer dimension?

Courageous change is now used in some countries as a replacement for entrepreneurial drive.

Question example: "Tell me about a time when you experienced a significant change and share the actions you took to adapt to the new circumstances".

You can build the story with a flow similar to the one of the entrepreneurial drive dimension, underlying the component of change and how you reacted to it instead of how you started something.

Good luck!

Hi there,

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for a lot of users, thus I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, “courageous change” is now used in some countries as a replacement for entrepreneurial drive as part of the McKinsey PEI.
  • Instead of focusing on how you started something, you may base your story on the element of change and how you responded to it, comparable to the „entrepreneurial drive“ dimension. Here, you want to emphasize how you dealt with a novel situation while still managed to produce the intended outcomes.
  • A sample question would be “Share a time when you went through a major transition with me, along with the steps you took to adjust to the new environment.“

In case you want a more detailed discussion on what to do in your specific situation, please feel free to contact me directly.

Best,

Hello,

Your question is not very clear to me, but from what I understand, here are my thoughts:

1- Always recommended to structure your stories in the STAR format as you may know.

2- With PEI, it's important that you focus a LOT more on the Action, Result and Learnings.

3- Thus with your story on adapting to change, highlighting setbacks is fine. But what is more important is how you used those setbacks to your advantage, how did you behave during those setbacks, did you make some leadership decisions or showcased some powerful skills that helped you overcome those setbacks, etc.

Hope this helps!

All the best!

Rushabh
