For internal strategy roles (and consultancies within larger firms), always make sure to be ready for anything. You'll want to prepare for “classic” cases as well as unconventional ones and, importantly, more “lose” and flexible interviews where they do a series of brainstorming questions as opposed to a classic case.

Of course, you are far far more likely to get questions/case related to the type of work they do (Industry 4.0, IoT, lean, supply chain, etc.

I've helped candidates prepare for similar internal strategy roles from similar German industrial firms. I've also went for a few corp strategy interviews during my time at BCG. So sharing a few perspectives:

• Internal/corp strat roles are looking for the same traits as MBB/T2 firms. Look at the traits that MBB looks for and you won't go wrong
  • Problem solving, communication etc
• The interview format is where it differs more to pure consulting firms
  • It is often less structured than the consulting interview
  • I've sat for written cases before, mini-cases (e.g. partial discussion and not a full blown case interview), but regardless of the format, they are testing the fundamentals and skills mentioned above

So what should you do?

• Focus on your fundamentals → If you have this, you really won't need to worry about process
• Reach out to HR to clarify on the specific format, they are the best placed to give you the right answer on this

I've recruited (and was a recruiter) for a corporate strategy role in an industrial company.

The interview process was similar to strategy consulting, and all the interviewers were ex-MBB/RB, etc.

All the interviews had a case. However, all the cases would be related to the company or its industry… e.g. how to evaluate a new technology for one of their business lines, discuss the potential carve out of a certain business line, estimate market size for a certain component, evaluate synergies (and risks) of buying a key customer, etc.

Some of the interviews would be less structured and focus more on the creativity or ability to generate a great deal of hypothesis (for what tends to be called “brainstorming questions”). 

General knowledge of the company, its business lines, key products, and key geographies can significantly boost a candidate's performance (and particularly show that you are genuinely interested in that specific company)
