I am a consultant but failed to answer "What's your most memorable project?" question well.

I feel like in each project I played a role as a consultant and there is nothing special.

Hello!

I think the best approach here depends on the context you are being asked this question in, and what you are trying to show with the answer.

If you're being asked this question from a prospective applicant, I would recommend picking a project that was most exciting for you and explain why, or one that was exciting in terms of impact (e.g. delivering an innovative product, creating social impact, working closely with the C-suite).

If you're being asked this question in a job interview, I would try to highlight a project which speaks to your interests and some skills that you want to highlight. For example, you might choose a project you did in the industry that you are now applying for a job in, and explain how your experience on that project generated an interest for said industry, which then led you to apply for this job. You could also mention particular experiences on the project that testify to your skills in terms of leadership, teamwork, technical aptitude, or something else.

It's tricky to give more cohesive advice without more details on the context and the projects you worked on, but feel free to reach out and we can discuss more, or book a coaching session to do a deep dive and workshop your answer.

Step 1: Prepare well for it. If this question caught you by surprise in the first instance then make sure you nail it down in your notes.

Step 2: Choose a project. There are many ways to do this.

  • Your first project - that “taught you a lot"
  • Your most recent project - that “shows you in your most senior role yet”
  • Your most involved project - one where you did the most amount of running around and will be able to showcase a vast number of skills to the interviewer
  • Your most “quirky” project - this is generally my personal favorite approach. Pick something that is offbeat and will easily stick in the interviewer's mind.

Step 3: Write down your answer. Make sure it ties-in to the rest of your story and showcases as many of your qualities as possible.

Step 4: (Most important) Practice your answer well - make sure that your excitement shows through. Try practicing in front of a camera/mirror - or even with a coach.

Hi there,

It's hard to say without speaking with you! Normally I work with candidates to dive deep into their experiences and figure out which moments were biggest. Feel free to reach out and we can do that together!

That said, you need to pick the project that was most interesting to you and where you had a strong impact…make sure it highlights your skills, strengths, and interests.
