What to expect in the first interview with the Partner - McKinsey

Dear Community, 

I am having my first interview directly with the Partner at McKinsey- this will be for an experienced hire within the Product Development and Procurement Practice. I have already completed the Problem Solving Game but had no other interview so far. 

Could you please share some insights on what I can expect at this stage of the interview?

Well done on passing the problem solving game. In terms of your question:

Q: Could you please share some insights on what I can expect at this stage of the interview? 

You should get the standard flow of PEI + case + your questions. Sometimes when you have partner interviews they might:

  1. Spend more time on fit/PEI and your alignment with the company.       
  2. Not use a "standard" case. Although in most offices McKinsey cases remain standard in finals as well.
  3. Given you are an experienced hire: ask questions about your industry / your view of the sector.

Bonus point: partners often give cases related to the industries they cover. If you know their sectors, it is a good idea to review those industries / read their research papers on that / do cases related to that sector.

Hi Rothut,

You should expect both a fit and case interview. 

Try not to stress too much about it being a Partner, but, in general, Partners are more “free-flowing”. They are more likely to interupt, go off path (do what's not expected/planned), etc.

Ultimately, make sure you're prepared to talk about yourself, defend why you're interested in and fit for the role. Make sure you know how to think through and answer questions in an objective-driven, structured, MECE way.

That's great to hear. It sounds like you were fast-forwarded directly to the Partner talk. 

Yes, three points to take into account for this conversation with the Partner:

  1. Focus on excellent communication. Senior interviewers care a lot about how clearly you communicate and how you manage to forge a connection with the interviewer. It's important to be top-down and concise as much as possible with your answers while allowing the conversation to flow in a natural way.
  2. Put yourself in their shoes. The one question senior interviewers are asking themselves throughout the interview is what will happen when they'll put you in front of a client they've groomed for years? Make sure that even based on this first impression you seem somebody who can be trusted and who can work with any client regardless of how difficult they might be.
  3. Expect less structure. Senior interviewers already have the confidence that you are a decent candidate, your skills having been already vetted by their younger colleagues. They are rather more interested in you as a person and your way of thinking. So they might present you with an unusual case, or one that is created on the spot or no case altogether. Expect anything.

Aside from this, prepare a short pitch about who you are and what makes you stand out. Don't overprepare it though - just have in mind the main bullet points that you'd want to get across.

Hi there,

looks like this might be either a regular case interview or an initial screening call.  

  1. Regular case interview: in such case, expect PEI + interviewer-led case. Especially for experienced hires, Partner interviews early on in the process are not uncommon.
  2. Screening call: tests fit for the role / calibration with your experience, motivation + sometimes behaviourals

Would be good to get some more insight on what HR communicated to you, then can advise more specifically.
