Re-recruiting MBB full time

I applied last summer to an MBB consultant internship and made it to the last round, but I didn't get it. I was feeling discouraged at the time so I didn't ask for feedback from my interviewers, but I decided I wanted to give it another go for full time.

I realize it would have been better to ask feedback/connect throughout the months, but do any of you know if it's possible, for example, to connect with the mentors the company assigned me to from the last interview process now? Also, is feedback kept in the system so I could potentially ask my recruiter about it or is that not the case? Appreciate the advice in advance.

Hey!

Although it is understandable that you were feeling discouraged and probably wanted to clear your mind of the recruiting process after not passing, this is the single most important piece of information you could've had, especially if you got a no on the final round.

I would try to connect with the mentors, HR and also the people who interviewed you. Hopefully, they still remember you and will give you a couple of hints. HR should have access to your formal evaluation but might not be willing to provide you with the brief, as usually that is the interviewer's role.

Best of luck re-applying, I'm sure you've developed in the meantime and will get the final step :)

Hi,

Defintely ask them!

Ask specific questions so that they will be specific too - ask:

  • Overall feedback: why was I rejected
  • What was my weak areas: Structuring mece mutual or execlusivity, numerical accuracy, numerical pace, presence, case leadership, FIT questions - where they enough etc.

Just bare in mind that they might not remember or they might not even get back to you.

So, what I would do is:

  • Do a cold case with a coach on preplounge with the goal of pinpointing your development areas.
  • Take stock of my own weak areas - have a think, what am i struggling with, what am i doing well at.

You can take control of your own progress and growth.

Hi there,

I understand this feeling, good that you decided to give it a try again. An offer depends on effort and perseverance, you’re doing the right thing.

Although you can reach out to them, I am not sure it will be useful. As stated above, it will probably be a generic feedback that won’t help much. Besides that, you may have also other gaps and strengths that were not assessed in that specific case. Anyway, do it because you have nothing to lose.

The best way for you to understand your readiness state, gaps and strengths is to be evaluated by an experienced and honest professional. It may sound biases coming from a coach, but I really mean it.

If you would like to know more about what differentiates a coaching session from a mock one and how it can help you to improve your odds, Ill be happy to chat over a 20min call (free of charge).

Best regards,

Mari

Hey there 👋
It’s great that you’re re-energized and ready to go for it again! 💪 Here's how to approach the situation:

1. Connecting with Your Mentors

You can absolutely reach out to the mentors assigned during your last interview process. In fact, it’s a great idea to reconnect with them! They may remember you and be able to offer some insights or guidance on how you can improve for the next round. Even if it’s been a while, you can frame your message in a way that shows you’ve been reflecting on the experience and are eager to improve.

Example: "I really appreciated the chance to interview with [Firm] last summer and I’m now reapplying for the full-time role. I’d love to reconnect and hear any insights you might have on how I could improve my approach for the next round."

2. Asking for Feedback

Feedback may or may not still be in the system, but it's always worth asking! Reach out to your recruiter and politely ask if they can share any feedback from your previous interview. Even if they don’t have detailed notes, they might be able to give you some high-level feedback. Keep it positive and emphasize that you're committed to improving.

Example: "I’m reapplying for the full-time position and was wondering if you could provide any feedback from my last interview to help me prepare better for the next round. I’d really appreciate it!"

3. Moving Forward

Since you didn’t connect much after your last process, this is a great opportunity to build relationships now and gather feedback for future success. Keep building your network, practice rigorously, and refine your case and behavioral interview skills.

You’ve got this! Happy to support you if you want to prep further. 💬

Best, Alessa

Hi,

I really understand you were feeling discouraged and did not asked feedback. You can indeed reach out to your interviewer at that time and ask feedback in a more informal way. Another option is to ask your buddy that will be assigned before the first interview.

Good luck with your preparation.

Yes, you can contact your mentors again.

But let me be clear about this. More frequently than not the feedback you get is highly generic and not very useful. Because they want you to have a good experience, they want to be polite, and they also want to avoid any HR litigation risk. So they will be generic, and will hardly give you any real "tough" feedback.

Your own perception of the interview and your weak spots is usually more valuable.

Of course, you may discover a blind spot, so go for it and ask them.

In any case, nothing beats a detailed diagnostic from an experienced interviewer (i.e., experienced coach), if you know what I mean. This is where you will hear the hard truths... and how to improve on them.

Hi,

I hear you - don't give up!

  • Can you reach out? Yes, you can still reach out to mentors from your previous process; just be polite, acknowledge the time gap, and express genuine interest in reconnecting.
  • Feedback: Feedback is often kept in the system for a year or more, so you can ask your recruiter if they’re able to share any insights from your last interviews.

It’s a good move to re-engage now. Best of luck!

Sorry to hear.

Honestly, if you didn't ask for feedback back then, I don't see a scenario in which they would've kept it or remember it from back then.

Most consultants have several interviews per month and they forget, naturally, how each interview went.

It might be better instead to get a coach / expert assessment instead or if you have a friend in consulting who does interviews.

Best,
Cristian

Feedback is usually stored in the system (but not always).

Your best shot at accessing it? Talk to your recruiting contact directly—they’re the only ones who can share (or escalate) that info.

Best,

Alberto
