Pei time

How long does the PEI session take? 15 or 20 minutes? Should I try to time myself to finish cases within 40 minutes for McK?

Hey there,

PEI

The PEI can last anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes and it depends on the

  • office
  • interviewer
  • whether they have collected all the relevant information about your story

For more details, have a look at the detailed article I wrote about it: https://www.preplounge.com/en/mckinsey-pei

Cases

As for timing yourself with the cases, the McK cases are interviewer-led, which means that the interviewer will have an eye on the time in the succession of questions you are being asked. Usually, the case lasts around 25 minutes with 3-5 questions (some exceptions and different formats are possible). Hence, you have around 5-8 minutes per question.

Keep those figures in mind for rough temporal monitoring on your end.

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there. The full interview lasts for around 45 minute (approximately 15 min PEI, 20-25min case, and 5 min for questions and small talk). I agree with Ian that you should aim to finish the case within 20 min.

Specifically for McK, because the case is led by the interviewer, you should also be mindful of the time you spend on each questions. Try to keep your answer concise and to-the-point while proactively take interviewer to the next step.

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

It varies by the interviewer and situation, but yes, 15-20 minutes is about right. You should aim to finish cases within 20 minutes...some may go over but you do need to get used to the faster pace of "real-life" cases. P

PEI really depends but 15-20 mins sounds about right. Often the PEI comes first and it is the interviewer who determines how long to go with the case and so I wouldn't worry to much about "time myself to finish cases". It is the interviewers role to use the time to maximise the outcome.

Good luck!
