My initial round for this role was a code pair interview which i successfully completed. Now i have an invite for PEI interview in the next two days. The invitation mentions that the PEI will be on personal impact. Will this mean if I focus on this topic, it would suffice or can the interviewer go beyond this and ask PEI questions from other sections as well like leadership and entrepreneurial?
Also there was no mention of a case interview in my email. Is it a standard procedure that PEI's are always followed by case interviews or is it often the case for consulting roles and since mine would be more analysis and desk job, it might altogether not include a case round. I do not have a lot of time to prepare for this and must do immediately if it involves case round as well.
PEI round with McKinsey FOR C&I

Hi there, congrats on moving to the next round!
1. PEI – Personal Impact Focus
If your invite specifies Personal Impact, that will likely be the sole focus. McKinsey usually explores one PEI dimension per round. Just be ready for some follow-up questions that may touch on related traits like leadership or resilience — but no need to prepare full stories for other themes unless explicitly asked.
2. Case Interview
If no case is mentioned, and given this is a C&I (Client Capabilities & Insights) role, it’s quite possible there won’t be one — especially since these roles are more research- and analysis-focused. That said, if you have time, it doesn’t hurt to briefly review basic case thinking (e.g., structuring, interpreting data) just in case.
Next Steps:
- Prioritize building a strong Personal Impact story (STAR/SCAR format).
- Be clear on what McKinsey looks for: influence, handling resistance, decision-making.
- Light case prep only if time allows and you want to be fully covered.
Best of luck — you’re almost there and feel free to reach out if you need further guidance.
Best,
Evelina

Hi!
If they have told you that the PEI is on the Personal Impact dimension, it's unlikely that they'll ask you about the other dimensions.
If they have not mentioned a case, then it also seems that you won't need to prepare for one.
The best course of action is to confirm this information directly with your recruiting contact to eliminate any doubt, since it can vary by role and region.
Lastly, let me know if you need any help with your PEI prep - I can help.
Best,
Mihir

hey!
if your invite specifically mentions personal impact, then that’s likely the main focus, but interviewers sometimes explore leadership or drive as well, so it’s smart to prep all three just in case. if there’s no mention of a case, and you're applying for a C&I role (which is more research/analytics focused), it’s possible there’s no case at all. but to be safe, I’d quickly review some basic case concepts just in case it comes up informally. feel free to send your PEI story if you’d like feedback!
best, Alessa 😊

Hi there,
Congrats on getting invited to the interview!
If they said they will only focus on personal impact, then this is what you can expect indeed.
In terms of the format, indeed you seem to be going through a more unusual route. The typical one is that within each interview you start with the PEI then have the case.
Best,
Cristian

Hi there,
If McKinsey told you in advance which PEI dimension they’ll check, then yes — that’s the only one they’ll focus on in that round.
You still need to prepare the story. Generic STAR frameworks won’t cut it. McKinsey interviewers look for very specific examples on each dimension and they’ll keep digging until they find (or don’t find) those signals. Provide details in your stories.
Also, double check with the recruiter. It’s unusual to have only the PEI without a case. Could be a misunderstanding or an exception — best to be sure.
Best,
Alberto
