I got referral from a person on LinkedIn for the Junior Associate position at McKinsey & Company. However, it has been two days since that person submitted my referral, and I haven’t received an email from the company to apply. How long does it usually take to receive the email?

Hey there,

In my experience with McKinsey, the stage you are now in now can have timelines from anything between a day and sometimes even 2 weeks.

You can expect slower timelines this time of the year given the holiday season, but it would be good to follow up with the person that referred you if you don't get an invitation link by week 3 for them to find out about the status of your application

All the best!!

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, the time taken to process an application with a referral can vary considerably. Typically, it takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to hear back, especially during the holiday season and over New Year's Eve.
  • Moreover, I would advise you to follow up with your referrer if you have not heard from them after a week. A polite enquiry may help to confirm that your application has been submitted correctly.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey pre-interview assessment and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

I’ve had the same experience with referrals, but I wouldn’t wait three weeks to nudge your contact to remind the recruiting team.

Given we’re headed into the holiday season, it would probably be best to connect with that person in the next 1-2 days. They can shoot a note to recruiting and hopefully get that link out to you sooner. In the next 1-2 weeks, a lot of folks will be on vacation. Its not or first week of Jan. Either way, applications won’t be screened until the new year.

Hi there,

as we are approaching the end of year, things are slowing down at the firms. Year-end shutdowns might happen as early as Friday though. So you might want to follow up with your contact before that just to inquire about the status.

Fingers crossed

Hi there,

Expect delays before Xmas/the holiday season.

I would expect it to potentially arrive in early January next year.

All the best,

Florian
