McKinsey Application Frequency

Hi all,

I did the McKinsey Solve game a few months ago for an event but I am unsure whether it was good enough to get invited to an interview.

I know that the Solve results are valid for 12 months, but I am wondering if I try to apply now and don't get invited to the interview stage, can I reapply once the 12 months starting from the time I took solve passed, or do I need to wait a year after my rejection as well?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi there!

They basically count 12 months from when you were rejected.

But it's important to know that it's not exactly 12 months. It's not a mathematical period. They have this guideline because they assume that you'd need about 12 months in order to have developed skills that make it worth interviewing you again.

While you wait to really to McKinsey, make sure that you apply to other firms as well. This will sharpen your skills, build your confidence and increase your probability of getting fall-back offers. Here's a guide on how to develop an effective application strategy:

It was not an application for a job just the event, so if I would apply now I don’t know whether it would be good enough (with all other aspects of my application) to land an interview. In this case what would you recommend? If I apply now (with those Solve results) and get rejected would I need a 12 months wait period before trying again? Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Q: If I try to apply now and don't get invited to the interview stage, can I reapply once the 12 months starting from the time I took solve passed, or do I need to wait a year after my rejection as well?

The rejection ban holds from the moment you receive it. So you would be able to apply after 12 months (assuming that’s the ban length in your case) from the moment you receive the new rejection.

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the rejection from McKinsey in the past!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, it's important to remember that the results of the McKinsey Solve game are indeed valid for 12 months. However, if your score and/ or other parts of your application weren't good enough to get invited to the recruiting event, I would highly advise you to review and further improve your application files before applying again, at best together with an experienced coach.
  • Moreover, you need to understand that even if applications for recruiting events and internship/ full-time positions are sometimes treated separately, the typical ban period with McKinsey is 12-18 months. Therefore, if you were rejected when applying for the McKinsey event, chances are low that you would be invited to the interviews within this period.
  • Lastly, the decision to apply again should not solely depend on the McKinsey Solve score validity but also on your readiness to compete for a place in the firm. Make sure you are fully prepared, both for the case studies and personal experience interview, before considering re-application.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

Best,

Hagen

Hello,

The ban period is 12 months after the rejection date. You should be able to retake Solve when you apply again too.

Perhaps the best and most accurate response would be from the HR or recruiter themselves. Feel free to reach out to them and clarify when you are eligible back again.
