Back to overview

Hi! I just finished my 3rd round at McKinsey. About 30 minutes later they called to schedule another interview with HR. Does this mean I passed the 3rd round? The recruiter mentioned that no final decision has been made yet, and I’m not entirely sure how it went I did mistakes

Hi there,

Firstly, HUGE CONGRATS on making it through the McKinsey interviews - that's no easy feat!

The fact that HR is scheduling an interview does not necessarily mean that you passed the 3rd round. Most likely, HR just wants to give you an opportunity to ask any final questions you may have regarding the job, the office, their approach to staffing, and to hear about your preferences.

This could also mean that during the interviews, an idea came up that you may be a great fit for a different role (e.g., Expert track or specific Industry affiliation), and they may want to check if that's something you might be interested in.

Obviously there may be other reasons for the meeting, but I'd bet it's nothing negative :)

Hope this helps, and crossing my fingers that you land the job!!!

Sincerely,
Thor

Thank you very much! So it probably doesn't mean that he has good feedback. It's a separate part of the process.
Also from your experience, is there a chance that if I made math mistakes I could pass? Or is it something very negative?

Hi again,

Yes, you can definitely pass even if you made a math mistake. That is only one part of the full evaluation, and if for example you did quite well on that part in other interviews, they are likely to just chop it up to nerves.

That’s actually a pretty good sign — definitely not standard to get called for an HR chat right after Round 3 unless they’re still actively considering you.

Could be a few things:

- They’ve got two strong candidates and need a final signal to break the tie

- They want to clarify something from your performance (fit, logistics, interest)

- Or they're doing pre-offer due diligence while still finalizing decisions internally

Either way, if they weren’t seriously considering you, you wouldn’t be getting this extra round. So while it’s not a guaranteed “yes”, it’s definitely not a no — and better than radio silence.

Fingers crossed and let us know how it goes!

Hi there,

Getting an HR call after 3rd round is actually a good sign. McKinsey usually doesn’t schedule additional HR steps unless you’re under serious consideration. The recruiter saying “no final decision yet” is standard—they can’t officially confirm until the evaluation committee signs off.

The HR interview is typically about logistics, preferences, and practical details (start date, office, background checks), not another case or PEI test. Even if you felt you made mistakes, remember: nobody does a perfect interview, and by round 3 they’re mainly checking fit and closing points.

Best,

hey there :)

An HR call after your final round is usually a good sign, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re already in. Sometimes HR will clarify details, check preferences, or gather final input before the decision is made. The fact that they scheduled it so quickly suggests you’re still very much in the running. Also, nobody comes out of final rounds without mistakes, what matters is whether you showed structured thinking and coachability overall.

So: stay cautiously optimistic, but don’t over-interpret. You’ll know soon.

best, Alessa :)

I don't think you passed 3rd round yet.

But I don't understand why that additional interview would be with HR. That means that you are still "in the game", but there was something unexpected in the process and they probably need to explore alternative options.
