Can I break into MBB or Tier-2 consulting after BTech in India (non-IIT/NIT), and what roadmap should I follow?

Hi everyone,

I’m from India, currently in my 3rd year of BTech in Computer Science and Business Systems at VIT(graduating in 2027). I’m aiming for a career in consulting and had a few questions:

1) Is it realistically possible to break into MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) directly after undergrad in India, coming from a non-IIT/NIT background?

2) If not, what are my realistic chances with Tier-2 consulting firms right after graduation?

3) My long-term plan is to gain experience in consulting, pursue an MBA (ideally sponsored by my firm), and eventually transition into entrepreneurship.

I would love advice on the roadmap I should follow over the next 1–2 years to:

• Build the necessary skills.

• Get an internship by Mid-2026

• Maximize my chances of breaking into MBB (directly or via Tier-2 → MBA → MBB),

 • Build a strong case for MBA sponsorship,

 • Develop the right foundations for a future startup.

Any guidance or personal experiences would be very helpful. Thanks!

Hi,

you basically already have a roadmap and you will likely get the one or other GenAI generated answer here on your roadmap... but to answer some of your questions directly:

1) Is it realistically possible to break into MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) directly after undergrad in India, coming from a non-IIT/NIT background?
Possible but not likely. However, still worth trying if you have top 5-10% grades, strong experience, etc. You could position yourself for the AI units (e.g., BCG X)

2) If not, what are my realistic chances with Tier-2 consulting firms right after graduation?
A bit better but still a tendency towards traditional background. But your number of firms increase so odds of landing one offer across all apps goes up too

3) My long-term plan is to gain experience in consulting, pursue an MBA (ideally sponsored by my firm), and eventually transition into entrepreneurship.
Great plan and very common path for people to take

Best,
Lukas

Hi there,

it is possible to break into MBB from a non-IIT/NIT background, but you’d be competing against a very concentrated pipeline, so the odds are lower. Where you really have leverage is in building a strong track record early: top academics, relevant internships, and clear problem-solving stories.

Tier-2 and boutique firms are much more accessible out of undergrad and can give you the consulting experience you need for an MBA and a later MBB move. Many people use exactly that path successfully.

For the next 1–2 years, focus on three things: excel academically, get hands-on strategy exposure through internships (startups or smaller firms count), and build your network in consulting. If you keep that momentum, the MBA sponsorship and entrepreneurial foundation you’re aiming for will come naturally.

Best of luck!

1) It's not impossible, but the wild competition makes it very challenging. You can improve your chances by having a referral and a well-written and professionally reviewed application package (CV + CL).

2) Your chances are better for these ones, but still, the point from above applies.

3) That's doable, especially if you take the long-term view on this.

Re what you can do in the coming period to increase your chances of reaching your goal. I'd focus on two things:

1. Try and get consulting experience. Either through an internship with a consulting firm, or a job that enables you to develop and demonstrate consulting-like skills.

2. Try and get referrals before your apply. This guide will explain how:

1. It is possible, but not very likely. You will have to be on the very top of your class.

2. Chances are a bit higher. Once again, possible.

3. Consulting gives you the right foundations for a corporate job. It gives you great business understanding and prepares you for a CEO type of role. It is not as useful for a startup environment. However the brand name and network may be of help later on.

Hey there :)

Yes, it is tough but not impossible; Tier-2 firms are more realistic right after undergrad. Focus on strong academics, leadership roles, case prep, and internships over the next 1–2 years. Target a Tier-2 consulting internship by mid-2026, excel there, and use it for MBA sponsorship while building skills in problem-solving, client work, and business strategy, this sets you up for MBB later and gives a strong foundation for entrepreneurship.

best, Alessa :)
