BCG Coffee Chat Invite

Hello,

I accidentally missed a coffee chat invite from my top choice office last week and saw it about a week later. The invite was sent after solving Casey. Would this incident affect my results?

Hi there,

A coffee chat is normally informal networking, not a graded step in the process, so a delayed reply on its own is unlikely to be what decides your outcome, even if missing it is not the best look. What matters more is that you follow up now: reach out, apologise briefly, and express that you would still value the chat if the offer stands. Recruiters see inbox slips regularly and a prompt, professional recovery reads far better than silence.

One thing to keep in mind: since it came after Casey, it may have been tied to next steps, so the sooner you re-engage the better. Do not over-apologise or over-explain, just a short, warm message that shows you are genuinely keen on BCG and that office specifically.

Hope it helps. Feel free to drop me a message if anything is unclear and good luck with the process!

I wouldn't worry too much. Coffee chats are typically meant to help candidates learn more about the office and aren't usually part of the formal evaluation.

That said, missing it without responding isn't ideal. If you haven't already, I'd send a brief apology, explain that you only just saw the invitation, and express your continued interest in the office. It shows professionalism and enthusiasm, even if the chat can't be rescheduled.

I wouldn't expect this alone to have a meaningful impact on your interview outcome.

Best,
Franco

First, take a breath. This is very fixable and probably not as damaging as it feels right now.

A coffee chat is usually informal, a chance to connect, learn about the office, and build rapport. It's typically not a scored part of the formal evaluation the way a case or the Casey is. So missing it is unlikely to directly sink your candidacy, especially since you cleared the Casey, which is the real gate.

But don't just leave it. Silence is what turns a small miss into a bad look. What matters now is how you handle it. So act today:

  1. Reply to the invite right away. Apologize briefly and honestly, no long excuses. Something like: "I'm so sorry for the delayed reply, I missed this in my inbox and only just saw it. I'd genuinely love to still connect if the opportunity is open."
  2. Show real enthusiasm. Make clear this office is your top choice and you're keen. That eagerness counts for more than the slip.
  3. Keep it warm and brief. Don't over-apologize or grovel. One clean, sincere note is enough.

The truth is, people miss emails, recruiters know this. What they're really watching is whether you're proactive and professional when something goes sideways. Handle it well and you may even leave a better impression than if nothing had happened.

So send that note now. Don't let embarrassment cost you more time than the miss already did.

I wouldn't read too much into it.

A coffee chat is typically an opportunity to learn more about the office and for the office to get to know you a bit better. It's usually not part of the formal evaluation process.

Of course, if it was your top-choice office, it's a pity to have missed it. But missing it by accident is very different from declining it intentionally.

If the event has already passed, I probably wouldn't overthink it. If appropriate, you could send a brief note apologizing for missing the invitation and expressing your continued interest in the office.

Most importantly, I wouldn't assume this has affected your Casey results. Those are generally evaluated independently of whether you attended an optional networking event.

I'd stay focused on the recruiting process rather than worrying about this one incident.

hey

Missing a coffee chat invite almost never affects your Casey results or your candidacy. Coffee chats are informal, optional touchpoints meant to help you learn about the office. They are not part of the evaluation process, and consultants know people miss emails, especially during busy recruiting weeks. What matters is how you handle it now. Just reply, apologise briefly, and ask whether they’d still be open to connecting. It won’t hurt your chances.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the progress in the application process with BCG thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, a coffee chat is usually informal and not graded, so a late reply on its own is very unlikely to be the thing that decides your outcome, even if missing it is of course not ideal.
  • Moreover, I would advise you to follow up immediately by sending a short and polite note and apologizing briefly for the delay. However, please also reflect on your organization skills - missing a calendar invite is one thing, but noticing it only a week later is another.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming BCG interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

No, it won't.

Do reach out and apologise if you'd like to, just out of politeness. But you're not being evaluted based on coffee chats, so that shouldn't influence the interview assessment.

Best,
Cristian
