Preperation for interview for administration role at McKinsey

Hi,

I have recently received an invitation for an interview with McKinsey for an administrative role in the sales function, specifically for a proposal specialist position (experienced candidate). During my initial telephonic interview with HR, I was informed that the interview process would include a written exercise and an expertise interview. However, I am uncertain about the specific details of the interview and would appreciate any information regarding the inclusion of a PEI (Personal Experience Interview) or Case Interview format. If anyone has prior experience with similar interviews or can provide any recommendations, I would be grateful.

It's worth reaching out to HR to ask about this since you are applying for a specialist position. Without additional info, I would expect case + PEI, and prepare accordingly.

Written Cases

First, good luck!

I recommend the following:

Remember that most casing tips apply here (i.e. be very clear+focused on the objective, ruthlessly cut out information that doesn't help you meet this objective/question, make sure to thinking + communicate in a structured way, etc. etc.)
Practice/simulate this as much as possible beforehand...getting a coach to help you run through scenarios + how to react in inevitably challenging moments will do a world of good.

I have a number of written case I'd be more than happy to share with you! What I generally do with my candidates is, give them a written case x hours before our scheduled session (adjust # of hours based on the specific interview they're going to have), and then review their work during the session (as well as talk through tips+tricks to get better).

Great to hear that you've already chatted with them and have a glimpse into the interview format.

If I were you, I'd actually follow-up with them and ask whether they will have a PEI section or a case section. By the sounds of it, they won't, which should already enable you to focus your prep on what matters for you.

I would also follow-up to ask in more detail what they mean by written exercise (e.g., is it a written case?) and what is expected from you in the expertise interview (e.g., stories about you doing similar work or is it technical terms?).

The more you find out about this in advance the better you'll be able to prepare.
