Junior Associate or BA for McKinsey London?

Hi all,

I have been rejected by McKinsey London twice now for a BA Position (made it to second/final round interviews both times).

By the time the next BA positions close in October I will have exactly 2 years and 1 month of work experience.

Does this mean I cannot apply for the BA role and should go for JA instead? If so does anyone know when the JA positions open for McKinsey London?

Also wondering if the same applies to BCG and Bain and how I should go about applying to them.

Thanks for sharing — and first, congrats on reaching final rounds at McKinsey twice. That’s already a strong signal that you’re close.

To your question:
By October, with just over 2 years of experience, you may no longer be eligible for the Business Analyst (BA) role, which is typically aimed at candidates with 0–2 years of experience post-graduation. So yes, you should likely target the Junior Associate (JA) role instead.

JA applications usually open on a rolling basis or in early fall. It's best to keep an eye on McKinsey’s careers page and network with recruiters over the summer.

For BCG and Bain, the cutoffs are similar but slightly more flexible depending on your background.

If in doubt, apply to both levels — firms will typically slot you where they see fit.

You're clearly close. With a bit more experience and a refined story, you’re in a great position to re-apply with strength. Let me know if you’d like help refining your narrative for the JA track.

Hi there,

Below 3 years of work experience, you would usually still go for the BA role (similar for BCG/Bain I believe).

All the best,

Florian

Hi,

I would apply as an experience hire for the JA position. During the interview process, they will help you to get the right starting level. It's also important to understand that there are sublevels within each level, meaning the chances are you are starting at a certain level within a BA position.

The application window opens typically end July to September.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Hi there!

That's really unfortunate to hear. Have they provided you with feedback? Do you know what you need to work on? What about applying to other firms?

Regarding your question, check in directly with the recruiter. You might still be directed to apply for a BA role, despite the additional experience. And it might make sense to do that, since when you apply for a more senior role, the interview expectations also go up, making it even harder to get in.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

So sorry for the two results at McKinsey, I know how hard it is to almost get there. On the positive side, if you have reached to the final round, you probably have what it takes and it’s a matter of refinement. Let us know what prevented you from getting an offer.

I recommend you to reach out to HR about the entry level. Although the time is greater than 2y, it may be too early for a JA position (experienced hire).

Good luck!!

Best,

Mari

Work experience where—another MBB firm?

If not, McKinsey will most likely still consider you for a Business Analyst or Senior Business Analyst role.

You typically need 4–5 years of experience to qualify for a Junior Associate role.

Have a discussion with your previous recruiting contact about that. They will be more than happy to guide you (it's part of their job).

Best,

Alberto

Hi,

First off, as an experienced hire you should apply for the JA position.

You need to get feedback on why you were rejected - this is critical for your next bout of interviews.

  • Was it your structure?
  • Was it your numeracy?
  • Was it your FIT?

By understanding what went wrong you can better prepare for your next interviews.

As for interview rounds, JAs are hired year round, so you can apply when you are ready.

Good luck and happy to chat!

Yes, next time you should be applying for the Junior Associate position. If they have an issue but like your profile, they will redirect your application to the right one.
