How is my chance

I applied for Consulting Analyst in McKinsey and I just had my final round. On the case part, i did well on the structure and chart interpreting.

However, i bombed the math part. I got the wrong formula and that threw me off to the point that my interviewer needed to guide me and i got too nervous and make some calculation mistakes.

The thing is, i only have 1 chance for the final round as CA. My interviewer told me that he will debrief with my previous interviewers to make the final decision.

My first round and pre-phase interview went so well and i had an outstanding feedback, even all of my interviewers told me that they have no problem at all for the casing cause i did well.

It's just on the final round, i was not on my best fit and somehow got too nervous hence bombed the quant part.

Do I still have a chance to get the offer?

Thank you for sharing your experience. I understand that you are concerned about your performance in the final round of interviews for the Consulting Analyst position at McKinsey. It's unfortunate that you faced challenges with the math part and felt nervous during the interview.

While I cannot provide a definitive answer on your chances of receiving an offer, I can offer some insights based on my experience as a seasoned strategy consultant. The final decision is ultimately up to the interviewers and the overall evaluation process.

It's important to remember that the final round is just one part of the assessment. Your previous interviews and feedback were positive, which is a good indication of your capabilities and fit for the role. The fact that your interviewer mentioned debriefing with your previous interviewers suggests that they are taking a comprehensive view of your performance.

It's possible that the interviewers will consider your overall performance, including your strengths in structure and chart interpretation, as well as the challenges you faced during the math part. They may also take into account your potential, coachability, and ability to handle pressure.

To maximize your chances, I would recommend taking proactive steps. Reach out to your recruiting contact at McKinsey and express your gratitude for the opportunity to interview. Politely inquire if there is any additional information or feedback that you can provide to support your candidacy. This shows your commitment and willingness to learn and improve.

Remember, everyone has off days, and nerves can sometimes get the best of us. Focus on the positive aspects of your performance and the strong feedback you received in earlier rounds. Continue to develop your skills and stay positive throughout the process.

I wish you the best of luck and hope that you receive a positive outcome. Regardless of the outcome, remember that this experience can serve as a valuable learning opportunity for future interviews and career growth.

Hi,

The interview is a holistic assessment and also depending on relative performance of other candidates as well as availability of slots.

Hard to say - but don't lose hope. It's only final once the decision is communicated to you. I once also made a math error in a final round, and I only realized it after the interview, but I still managed to get the offer.

All the best!

Hi there,

Based on how you performed on previous first and second round interviews across all dimensions (PEI and case), there are 3 potential outcomes:

  1. You were above the bar in most dimensions in previous interviews and during interviewers debrief they see a solid case to send you an offer
  2. You were above the bar in some dimensions in previous interviews and after the debrief, interviewers decide to run an additional interview to make sure of their final decision
  3. You were close to the bar in most of the dimensions in previous interviews and interviewers decide to turn you down

Based in my experience at McKinsey, option 2 might be the most possible one if you were solid in previous interviews.

Good luck with final decision!

Alberto

Hi there,

The hire/no hire decision doesn't hinge on one dimension in one interview so try to relax a little. Instead, the decision will be based on all dimensions (and there's a lot in McKinsey that you're not aware of…) across all the interviews.

Considering your performance up until the last interview, you still have a chance, yes. I myself bombed the quant part in a final round interview and made up for it elsewhere, leading to my offer to join McKinsey.

Keeping my fingers crossed!

Moritz

Absolutely!

Try to stay optimistic.

I felt like I bombed all my interviews and still somehow passed. Interviewers don't care only about whether factually you give the right answer, but also how you handle that situation.

They also try to understand how you perform across multiple instances, so if you had a great performance multiple times before and bombed it once, that's acceptable (we all bomb it in life sometimes).

Hope you hear from them soon!

Best,

Cristian

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the progress in the application process with McKinsey thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, remember that interviews are a holistic assessment. While mistakes on the quant section are not ideal, they aren't the sole determinants of your evaluation. Your overall performance in the case study, along with the PEI, is what matters.
  • Moreover, everyone can have an off day and interviewers are aware of this. They also understand that candidates can get nervous, especially during final interview rounds. What's important is how you recovered from the mistake, how you managed your nerves, and how you concluded the interview.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi bombing just on one dimension is not a turndown if the others are spikes as you describe. You are saying nothing on PEI, how did it go? Equally important for final decision. Fingers crossed!

Hi, thank you for your answer. My last interviewer didnt give any feedback for the PEI, however my interviewers prior to this said that i had a really good stories and strong answer for my PEI. So i think i did good on that.

Hopefully it can help on the final result.

Hi there,

First, deep breaths.

I promise you, whatever the result you will be just fine.

You will either work at McKinsey or your will work somewhere else. And all will be fine.

In terms of this specific interview, while it's not great, yes you do still have a chance. If you performed very well in other aspects like you say, one possible outcome is they invite you in for an additional interview.

Keep us posted and fingers crossed for you!

Hi there,

Q: I bombed the math part. It's just on the final round, I was not on my best fit and somehow got too nervous hence bombed the quant part. Do I still have a chance to get the offer?

If you bombed the math part, it doesn’t look very promising.

On the other hand, your perception could be biased – sometimes candidates think they did badly when the performance was ok and the other way around.

If they are uncertain about your performance, they might ask for an extra interview to make a final decision.

Although I understand your desire to get a clear answer, the only thing you can do now is to act on what is in your control, that is (i) prepare for other interviews/ apply to other companies and/or (ii) wait for the results.

Good luck!

Francesco
