Expat for MBB in EU

Hello everyone!

I recently got the call for an offer to be extended to me in a Nothern European MBB office! I'd be coming from Asia and would like to know if anyone has any details for the expat package and the expected salary there to make sure everything is fair. I have a year of exp working and would be in a specialist role.

Thanks in Advance!

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offer!

Regardless of the exact package (you should be able to find some data points on Glassdoor), the base salary is normally non-negotiable in strategy consulting. However, you may be able to negotiate:

  • The signing bonus
  • The relocation bonus
  • The seniority you join

The easier way to negotiate is to have an “opportunity cost” due to another offer, either from a competitor or your current employer. There may also be differences in what you could negotiate due to the country you are in. Also, do note that not all countries offer the bonuses above.

If you want to learn more about negotiation, I would recommend “Never split the difference” by Chris Voss, which includes some great tips.

Best,

Francesco

Ex-Mckinsey (analyst->associate->manager) and now in tech (Bytedance) + Part time interview coach and mentor

Hey there !

Typically, all inclusive packages would be around $70-90k in Europe for an MBB Business Analyst role and $120-140k for an MBB Associate role (post MBA)

This includes bonus and allowance and is pre-tax of course.

In general, the MBB brand and experience overshadow any comp-related concern. It's a stamp on your CV for the next decades.

I personally had offers from non-MBB with higher comp but still decided to go for Mckinsey. I've never regretted this decision as the network you build, the brand you earn and the skills you acquire are all worth it !

Best of luck !

Mario

Hi there,

You forgot to tell us the actual role level! We also need to know what exact country.

If it's undergrad/entry-level you should expect somewhere in the 55-65k Euro range.

If it's MBA hire to Consultant you should expect around 90-110k Euro.

You should negotiate on signing bonus, specifically relocation bonus/assistance.

Hi there,

MBB dont do specific expat packages nor pay reallocation, but they offer you a signing bonus which can be used for all expenses, in addition to salary and bonus and often private health insurance, car, etc. The salary depends on your job level and location.

Good luck with the negotiation,

Lucie

Hi there,

On top of what was mentioned already, keep in mind that the offer is not ‘standard’ as it's often presented (especially for larger offices) and you do have some space for negotiation. The relocation bonus is one part of it.

Best,

Cristian

Hey there - congrats on the offer!

The package for Amsterdam for MBB is as follows
Analyst - 50-65k EUR

Consultant - 90-100k EUR

I have friends in stockholm/ Amsterdam/ Oslo offices for MBB firms. Feel free to reach out to me through DM and I can get you more information if you give me the firm/ office combination. I am also giving away a free consultation if you fancy having a chat about Northern Europe MBB. I was in the process with Bain and I used to live in Amsterdam. I am originally from India and I moved to Amsterdam from Singapore.
