Didn't do too well on Bain SOVA test but have partner referral, chances of interview?

Hi.

I recently took the Bain SOVA test after getting a partner referral from the office I'm applying to. I think I did well in terms of correct/incorrect answers, getting mostly correct answers (maybe 40/45), but went significantly over the time limit (did it in 90 minutes vs the recommended 75).

Would this be considered a poor performance and, if yes, what is the chance that a partner referral will override it?

Hi there,

Yes, there is a chance that you would still be invited to the interview but I think they would first discuss the results of your SOVA with the partner referring you.

It also depends what the results are - if they are way below the required minimum it would be a different discussion vs being slightly below the required baseline.

Good luck,

Lilit

Hi,

Not sure about Bain, but I do know that sometimes at BCG people were invited to the interviews despite lower than average digital test scores.

End of the day - you will only know when the decision is made to you. Suggest to gently follow up if it's been a week/2 weeks since the test.

All the best!

Hi there,

Remember that your application is hollistic.

So, a partner referral and a strong resume can absolutely overcome an average test.

Make sure to keep case prepping as if you have the interview!

Hi there!

It's not a stellar performance, yes :)

But you are perfectly right that a referral can override that. In fact, it's not so much a question of overriding it, but rather that your test scores are judged together with you CV, cover letter and referral. Even if the test scores are not great, the other elements can help compensate for it.

If you want to read more about what other elements of the application process you can optimise for, read this guide:

Hi there,

Completing the Bain SOVA test with a time overrun, even if you got many answers correct, might not be considered an ideal performance. However, it's essential to remember that the weight of your application isn't solely determined by your test score. Partner referrals can carry significant weight and positively influence your application. If you have a strong profile, relevant experience, and a compelling application overall, a partner referral can certainly help override any concerns about your test performance.

Best of luck with your application!

Warm regards, Frederic

Hi there,

Your application usually consider and weights the following factors:

  • CV / resume
  • Online test
  • Cover letter
  • Grades
  • Referrals

Even if you are not the strongest on all parts, you might get a go if the overall application is solid. If your referral is coming from a Partner who has worked with you, this can be an extra.

Good luck!

Alberto
