Hi there,

Senior Partners in MBB generally make millions through variable compensation, if business is going well. Remember that it's a Partnership so they're essentially shareholders and receive dividends.

Last year, for example, business was going well with demand >> supply for consulting projects. High fees were dictated by MBB and there was hardly any room for negotiation.

This year, they may have to settle for less and/or invest their compensation and working with clients that are attractive to have in their portfolio but can't afford the typical fees.

In any case, this shouldn't affect anything you're doing right now. Joining MBB with an eye on Senior Partnership is not a very practical approach to career development.

Hope this helps clarify!

Best,

Moritz

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • First of all, it's worth noting that unless you are a partner, this information may not be relevant for your specific situation and if you were a partner, you would most probably not need to ask.
  • It’s difficult to provide an exact figure for the total compensation of a senior partner, as it varies depending on factors such as location, years of experience, and performance. However, the fixed component of the total compensation for a senior partner is likely to be in the range of $500-700k.
  • It's important to note that this is only an estimate, and that the variable component of the total compensation tends to increase and outweigh the fixed component as one advances in the ranks.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Compensation breakdown for BCG “MDPs” (BCG term for Partner) and “MDSPs” (BCG term for Senior Partners) is actually quite complex, and is something that is also quite guarded as well - (for various reasons).

2 things I will share:

1) There are very, very, very few corporate jobs (excl. high finance) that will compensate you as well as the MDSP role does consistently. In short, making MDP/MDSP is the most risk-free way of becoming part of the top ~x% (single digit) of your country's earners.

2) Some answers given already are closer to the actual average MDSP salary (i.e. in the millions). Happy to chat more on actual average ranges.

FYI - the jump from “Partner” to “MDP” is exponential, and it is not uncommon for Principals & Senior Principals to be shown some version of an income curve by time, as a way of them showing you the trajectory and potential if you stay on (that is one of the pitches of becoming an MDP)

30% off in April 2024 | Bain | EY-Parthenon | Roland Berger | Market Sizing | DARDEN MBA

There's a huge variability in that. Really depends on the specific office and the performance of the partner. If the partner manages a large and profitable account, it can be several million…

Base salary may be around $400-500k, but most compensation is variable.

Hi there,

You're looking at a minimum of approx $500k to more than $1M. You need to remember that this is also going to be dependent on the region and how good you are at driving business.

Try not to think about this right now (I'm assuming you're coming in as an entry-level of consultant)

Hi there,

There's no exact figure, but you could expect around $1M and over.

The interesting thing is that while at Partner level the compensation is still regionally dependent (i.e., a Partner in the NY office will get a different compensation than once in the Jakarta office, individual performance aside), for Senior Partners the compensation is global, which means they all make the same base.

Then there's a significant variation in compensation based on their performance, performance of their office, of the firm in that year, the practice they are part of, and the sort of roles they play and committees they are part of.

Anyway, is that enough to make you want to become Senior Partner? ;)

Best,

Cristian
