BCG exit opps

Hi All,

Currently working in BCG sub saharan Africa and want to pivot into Europe's consulting/PE/VC field. Happy to move into a T2 consulting role, think I have good chances.

Only issue is: I will require visa sponsorship but hoping that my education both undergrad and masters having been done in the UK for 5 years will sort of help me?

Have 2 years experience as an associate and will very soon be promoted to Consultant. Any advice you have for me on how I can make the switch to the UK/EU?

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

Ultimately you want to first try to move internally, where possible.

Then, in terms of external, you need to network a ton.

Remember that this is going to require patience, timing, and a bit of luck. Put in the work to network and apply to a ton of places, but also recognize that this is unlikely to be immediate.

A BCG background + UK degree will help, but it's always hard to get a job somewhere without working rights, so temper expectations on how easy it will be.

Hi there,

1) Hoping that my education both undergrad and masters having been done in the UK for 5 years will sort of help me?

It depends on the firm/country, but in general this should be doable.

2) Any advice you have for me on how I can make the switch to the UK/EU?

I would first try to move internally within BCG. If it doesn’t work, I would recommend looking for an internal referral to increase the chances of an invitation.

Good luck!

Hi there,

Your primary goal is to achieve this internally as you would keep the BCG brand, your network, and your experience in the firm. Overall a much smoother experience.

The reason internal transfers are slow at the moment is the same hiring is slow for all firms in general. There is little appetite to sponsor visas in the current landscape.

Both for internal and external moves, you would need to network a lot.

Internally reach out to relevant partners and ask them to be staffed on their projects in Europe. This is often the first step. If you perform well, you could ask for another project or a short-term relocation. From there you can work on your full-time relocation.

It's important to gather enough support for your case in the partner group.

All the best,

Florian

Hi there!

You have a cool situation.

So, I would consider a couple of avenues:

1. Check whether you'd want to make a transfer within the firm to one of the European offices. Since you've already been in the firm for a couple of years, this should be possible. You need to get the right support for it from Partners from the target office.

2. Apply directly for roles in Europe in the geography that you would prefer. Prioritise roles in locations that would make the Visa topic less complicated.

3. Reach out to European headhunters/recruiters and explain to them what you are looking for. They can then do some of the work on your behalf.

Best,
Cristian

Have you tried an internal transfer to Europe via BCG? If you are a strong performer with good ratings in the last few cycles this is your safest bet to pivot to a new region.

Not super strong performer but in good standing. Was told internal transfer opportunities are low at the moment so considering doing things outside on my own

Hey,

I suggest you stay with BCG as a Consultant for a few more years in order to build some valid expertise in some field. After that, it would be easier to sell your experience to Europe if you have a certain unique skill-set (not just pure generalist).

Also, you can look at the fields those T2 companies in Europe specialise in and tailor your experience accordingly.

Good luck!
Nick
