BCG: Can you interview for city X and ask to be placed in office Y when you receive the offer?

So, both the cities are in the same region and very much interconnected. There has always been a transfer of people between both offices. Also city Y is a very large office with hundreds of people and city X is a small office with c.50 people.

I am interviewing for office X but I would prefer office Y. I also have an offer at another firm. So I would put my preference as

BCG Y > offer at another firm > BCG X.

I am thinking once and if I get the offer, I will request them for it? If I don't get then I will just take the other offer.

Has anyone faced anything similar and has it worked out?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi there,

It's not proper etiquette but it has been done before. That said, the "hit rate" is normally quite low. I've seen a lot of people get disappointed with this approach/tactic and the have the added downside of having caused a bit of a bad taste in Office A's mouth.

This is also heavily dependent on your recruiting path AND country/office.

I understand why you're not stating the office/company, but it's hard to advise without knowing.

For example, this move is pretty much impossible in the US. However, in Australia it's incredibly fluid (I interned in Sydney but took the full time offer in Melbourne). That said, Australia very much overtly gave the option to pick cities.

Hi there,

You can ask, but they may ask to interview again in office Y. Alternatives would be to:

  1. Work 1-2 years in X, then ask for a transfer
  2. Ask HR if it may be possible to move the application now to Y due to reason XYZ

Best,

Francesco

Worth checking the specificities of the two cities you are considering. I know this is about BCG but this is not true at McK where NY and NJ are in different "regions" where they even have a satelitte office for NJ folks so that they don't crowd up the NY office.

Good luck!
