Ban after screening rejection

Will I be banned to re-apply again this month after BCG resume screening rejection in July? I got rejected at the screening stage and I didn't even get to pass the online test.

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the rejection from BCG!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, it's unlikely you'll be able to reapply immediately within the same month after a resume screening rejection. Usually, there's a ban period of 12 to 18 months before you can reapply, depending on the firm's policy.
  • Moreover, I would highly advise you to review and improve your resume and possibly get feedback from an experienced coach. Take the time during this ban period to bolster your experience, skills, and maybe take on projects that could make your application stand out next time.
  • Lastly, I would highly advise you to contact the recruiting department to get clear guidelines on reapplication timelines and what you can do to improve your chances for next time.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

If it's for the same role + recruiting channel, then yes. After rejection you generally need to wait a year.

There are some exceptions (for example, early recruiting in summer prior to entering an MBA, then recruiting that fall), but, all things equal, you need to wait a year.

Additonally, don't try the same thing and expect different results.

Invest in a coach to maximize your odds and:

  1. Fix your resume
  2. Fix your cover letter
  3. Get your networking right
  4. Make sure you pass the test

Hi there!

Basically, if you were rejected (regardless of the stage), you cannot apply for 12 months in most geographies.

Some candidates apply to a different office with a different email address and a different CV and they manage to pass unnoticed this way, but it's somewhat dangerous.

My advice would be to focus on the other firms for now and making sure that you have a strong application strategy. Sharing a guide with you here on how to build the latter:

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

I agree with Jan. Typically, you have to wait at least one year before reapplying because that gives you the opportunity to do the following:

  1. Gain additional and relevant work experience
  2. Attend courses as well as earn industry-relevant certifications
  3. Prepare for interviews by not only fixing your CV and cover letter but also by securing referrals for your next application
  4. Expand your professional network

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me privately, as I would be delighted to offer you personalized feedback and enhancements for both your CV and cover letter. We can subsequently discuss these improvements during one of my coaching sessions.

Hi there,

Q: Will I be banned to re-apply again this month after BCG resume screening rejection in July? I got rejected at the screening stage and I didn't even get to pass the online test.

In most cases, the ban has a minimum period of 12 months before you can apply again.

If you still want to apply during the ban, I would recommend the following:

  • Wait at least 6 months.
  • Look for a referral, if possible in a different country.
  • Talk to the person and ask if there is an opportunity in that country. Disclose the previous rejection to them (as most likely they will find out anyway). If they say no, wait for the end of the ban. If they say yes, let them talk with HR to check if there is an option.

You can find more on referrals here:

Good luck!

Francesco

Absolutely, receiving a rejection at the screening stage doesn't mean you cannot be successful in the future. It's quite common for candidates to face initial setbacks in the application process. To improve your chances, it's generally recommended to wait at least 12-18 months before reapplying. During this time, focus on gaining more experience, acquiring new skills, or achieving significant accomplishments that can strengthen your application and demonstrate your growth. This approach often leads to a more successful outcome in your future application.

Best regards,
Frederic
