I am currently in the process of applying for a position at Bain & Company and wanted to reach out with a quick question.

Could you please share any insights or tips you have for the online assessment and case interview preparation at Bain? I would greatly appreciate your guidance.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hi there!

Ex-Bain here, ready to help!

The different sections of the Bain test are the following:

  • Situational Judgement Test (SJT)
  • Numerical Reasoning
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Logical Reasoning
  • Personality Questionnaire
  • Video interview

The objective is to evaluate your skills while putting you under pressure with time management. Hence, you should not underestimate it. You can find abundant material online that you can use to practice and become more confortable with the type of questions.

When it comes to case preparation, you can prepare exactly as you would do for any other firm. Put some time into it, practice with other people and if you would like some guidance get the help of coach.

And don't forget about the fit questions, being ready to answer those questions was so fundamental in my application process and key for getting the offer (I have a document with all the questions that you can prepare with, let's chat in private if you want to know more about it).

Best luck with your interview process,
Francesca

Hi there,

Completely agree with Sidi here. You'll want to confirm which exact test it is.

From there, remember that these tests are very similar in terms of what they test.

The best way is to really find online tests / questions and practice. Regardless as to whether is a new or old test, the principles are mostly the same:

  • Time management (need to think quick)
  • Business knowledge/context (incl key formulas)
  • Critical thinking (answers that are very similar to each other...clues "hidden" in the text)
  • Ability to interpret data/charts

Think of it as a merge of a case and the GMAT/GRE.

You need to be clear on some key case-related and account formulas (margin, growth, breakeven, etc) as well as be good at critically understanding the question (including nuance to questions) and parsing through complicated text with a fair amount of distraction.

You'll also need to be good at chart/graph reading.

The (old) McKinsey PST, BCG Online Test, Bain SOVA test, etc. are all quite similar so leverage resources across all of them.

Hi!

Bain is using MULTIPLE tests in different offices/geographies (pymetrics, SOVA, Gorilla, etc), and thy frequently change it. Therefore I always urge my mentees to inquire with recruiters which EXACT test they need to take, before discussing any strategies.

Cheers, Sidi

Hi there,

Q: Could you please share any insights or tips you have for the online assessment and case interview preparation at Bain?

In terms of the case interview preparation, you can find a few tips below:

How to Prepare for a Consulting Interview

In terms of the online assessment, Bain uses different kinds of tests depending on the office location. You can check with HR the type of test and they should be able to clarify. Based on that, you can check resources for that specific test.

Good luck!

Hi there!

Lots of useful advice below already.

Two additional inputs:

1. Reach out asap to HR and clarify the format of the test. This shouldn't be a surprise for you. Knowing what type of test it is based on your office will enable you to get better prepared.

2. Regardless of the type of test, you'll find this handy - it's a collection of all the common business terms that show up in these tests and interviews:

Best,
Cristian
