Hi All,

I am a senior consultant who works at one of the Big 4 companies. I've been told that I would be getting a promotion to become a manager soon, but at the same time, I have just received an offer from Orphoz, a subsidiary of Mckinsey, to work as their senior consultant (senior associate).

Coming from a Non-MBA background, I believe that this is a chance of a lifetime for me. However, I could not find a lot of information about Orphoz (since this subsidiary is quite new), so if any of you could give me some insights about Orphoz (especially related to the career prospect), I'd be very grateful. Thank you in advance! :)

Hi there,

I worked with Orphoz colleagues (project lead and consultants) on a 6-month transformation project before.

They do work in the McKinsey style and usually, you might get staffed with other consultants directly from McKinsey depending on the project.

Orphoz has a stronger focus on long-term transformation projects where they usually support the clients during the implementation phase. I found the Orphoz team a lot more relaxed and my work-life balance has been the best in my overall time at McKinsey.

But you don't get the same resources, benefits, and compensation as at McKinsey. For example, they didn't have full visual graphics support, etc.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the offer!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • First of all, I would advise you to accept the offer right away if you feel this is a unique opportunity for you. Whether you still get promoted to manager (and then get demoted to senior consultant) or not will not have much impact on your future career prospects.
  • To find out more about the career prospects at Orphoz, please refer to the official website. For instance, when I had a look at the German website, they listed all current vacancies, from Intern up to Project Leader. Moreover, please also have a read on rating platforms like Glassdoor to get a better understanding on more subtle aspects.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your upcoming career change, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hi there,

There are great networking questions here! Speak to people at the firm to get an ideal of item a

For item b and c, this role is not really going to be something McKinsey cares about. I have not heard of Orphoz, so unless they are very prestigious in the UK, it's not going to move the needle. More important is how well you progress in the firm and the roles/responsibilities you.

Additionally, please don't join firm x just because you want firm y. for all you know, you might end up hating McKinsey and want to go back to Orphoz. You may never get into McKinsey. Join Orphoz because you want to work at Orphoz.

For d, there is always room for negotiation! You may consider getting a coach to help you with this. The main rules are to be reasonable but firm, figure out what is easy for them to offer, and figure out your BATNA.

Good luck!

Hey there,

Orphoz has already existed for quite a while but given the answers here, it seems that the brand is not really associated with McKinsey (yet), outside of the firm.

As for the work you will do, you work side-by-side with McKinsey consultants.

If you are planning to move, the sooner the better since, regardless of your promotion in B4, you would start as a Sr. Associate in McK / Orphoz. Better make that career step with your new employer. :-)

Cheers,

Florian

Hi,

i hope its not too late. I worked for Orphoz in Berlin for 2 years and left afterwards to Big4.

I wouldn't recommend it anymore to go to Orphoz. In the recruiting process they tell you differently things, because they dont find people, who whant to work for them and a lot of them are currently quitting after the corona job market got better.

- Projects: before a year they let you do normal McKinsey strategy projects, but now youre only allowed to do pmo. which means you do all the tasks Mckinsey dont want to do (make appointments..). As an Orphoz employee you are put on a Mckinsey project and have exactly the same working hours for much worse conditions. Furthermore, you can't specialize like at Mckinsey, you have to do the branches and functions you are assigned to.

- Working hours: same as Mckinsey (till 2 am), but 50% less salary; no pension plan, no car.

- Exits: Due to the fact that you don't build up any expertise anymore, it is extremely difficult to make a good exit. Most of them move to smaller consultancies or Big4 after that

- You are not allowed to do a lot of training like at McKinsey, because you are not supposed to do any technical work.

- You are constantly made to feel that you are a 2nd class employee, be it because of travel regulations, exclusion from trainings, events, food....

Hi there,

The question is a bit broad.

You work alongside McKinsey colleagues to deliver work for clients. Hence, it is pretty similar to the typical McKinsey lifestyle.

Ian is right → reach out and network as these questions are perfect conversation starts.

Cheers,

Florian

I don't know anything about Orphoz. Just wanted to comment that if the promotion is expected to happen in a short time frame (and will effectively happen), you may ask to stay for a longer period so you can get that on your resume, as it may pay dividends later.

Hi there,

I like Pedro's take here - if you can delay the offer by a bit (tell them you're finishing up a project, or want a break in between jobs, etc) and wait for that promotion, then do it! I'm assuming “soon” means a few months by the way.

Personally, I have not heard of Orphoz. If it will truly get you the McKinsey brand, you should go for it! But, just double-check this assumption…I haven't heard of Orphoz yet.
