The term “BearingPoint” originates from navigation in maritime contexts and literally translates to “bearing point” or “course direction.” For us, it stands for goal-oriented work with a strategic component. We don’t act randomly; instead, we first set a goal, a point toward which we align our bearing, and then navigate accordingly.

What many people don’t expect about working as a consultant is how dynamic and diverse the job truly is. From the outside, it can seem like consultants always have the answers but in reality, the work is about quickly understanding new topics, navigating complex situations, and developing solutions together with the client. Every project is different, which means you’re constantly learning and growing.Another surprise could be how much the role relies on communication and collaboration. Technical or analytical expertise is essential, but equally important is the ability to explain ideas clearly, inspire confidence, and build alignment among different stakeholders. Consulting isn’t about telling others what to do. It’s about bringing people together, shaping decisions, and guiding change in a constructive way.The work can be challenging, since projects often start with ambiguity, but that’s part of what makes it so engaging. You learn to manage uncertainty, prioritize effectively, and find practical solutions. At the same time, consulting offers the unique opportunity to gain insights into many industries, organizations, and ways of working in a short period of time.In short: consulting isn’t a job for those who think they already know everything. It’s for people who love to learn, think critically, and make a real impact together with others.

Grades are just one element of our evaluation process and primarily serve as an initial indicator of academic strength. What truly matters is the complete picture of your professional profile: your relevant experience, technical knowledge, and proven ability to deliver results. We value achievements such as internships, project work, and industry exposure because they demonstrate practical capability. While a strong GPA can be advantageous, our decisions ultimately focus on your overall qualifications as well as the cultural fit.

It really depends on the type of project. Some projects are carried out completely remotely, while others have clients who prefer that we work mostly or fully on-site. In most cases, it’s a mix, a few days at the client’s location and the rest working remotely. For international projects, we sometimes travel for specific phases, but a lot of the collaboration happens virtually. Overall, it’s quite flexible and usually depends on the client’s needs and the project setup. When we’re not at the client site, we can choose whether to work remotely or from one of our offices. Although there is no mandatory office policy, many of us still enjoy going in to collaborate more closely, connect with colleagues and expand our professional networks. Overall, it’s a highly flexible setup that can be adapted to suit different projects and personal preferences.

The everyday life of a business consultant is undoubtedly challenging but it’s precisely these challenges that make the role so rewarding. The variety of projects and clients demands a high level of adaptability and the ability to quickly dive into new topics. Those who embrace this challenge not only grow professionally but also develop a broad set of personal skills. Time pressure, complex requirements, and diverse stakeholder interests are part of the job. Yet these elements offer the opportunity to work in a structured way, set clear priorities, and create real impact. Communicating with different stakeholders fosters empathy, persuasiveness, and diplomatic finesse. All of which are valuable far beyond the scope of any single project. Frequent travel and flexible working hours require strong self-management. Those who find a healthy balance benefit from a dynamic professional life with plenty of autonomy and room for personal growth. For me personally, time management remains one of the most recurring challenges in consulting. With shifting priorities, tight deadlines, and frequent travel, it’s easy to feel stretched thin. Yet over time, I’ve come to see this challenge as a powerful driver for growth. It pushes me to refine my routines, sharpen my focus, and become more intentional with how I allocate my energy. What makes this journey more manageable, an of course more meaningful, is the strong sense of teamwork at BearingPoint. Finally, consulting thrives on continuous learning. New methods, technological trends, and soft skills are necessary. For those who enjoy shaping change, growing through experience, and driving progress, business consulting is a demanding yet deeply fulfilling career path.

The most interesting project I’ve worked on so far was a large IT migration project for a major client. Our team was quite big, around 30 people on average and included colleagues from different backgrounds, from tech experts to business consultants and project managers. It was super dynamic, and I learned a lot about how to bring all these perspectives together to make the project a success. What I really enjoyed was the team spirit over time, through all the collaboration and long days, some real friendships actually developed within the team. It was a great experience both professionally and personally.

BearingPoint stands out from other consultancies through its partner-led and independent structure as well as its European roots combined with global reach. Around 200 partners take personal responsibility for the business, ensuring long-term orientation and strong commitment to clients, unlike capital market-driven firms. Another distinctive feature is its holistic service portfolio, which goes beyond traditional management consulting to include proprietary products and managed services. This enables BearingPoint to combine strategic advice with technological solutions and IP-based assets, delivering integrated transformation. What truly sets BearingPoint apart is its corporate culture: The focus is clearly on shared goals and collaboration. Personally, I have never experienced an elbow mentality. Instead, there is a cooperative environment across all hierarchical levels that prioritizes collective success.

There’s no such thing as a typical day as a consultant. No project, client, or topic is ever quite the same. Still, many days start the same way: with a cup of coffee and a quick glance at the inbox. From there, it’s straight into a mix of strategic work, analysis, and coordination. I often review processes, challenge ideas, and develop concepts, presentations, or workshops. A large part of my day is spent collaborating with colleagues, discussing approaches, and aligning on solutions and a significant portion is dedicated to meetings and coordination with clients to understand their needs, discuss progress, and agree on next steps. This all takes place in the office, at the client’s site, or from my home office. What makes it exciting is that each day brings new questions, perspectives, and challenges. There’s rarely any routine, but plenty of variety – and the satisfaction of driving impact with clients and guiding teams. And no matter how different the days may be, one thing almost always stays the same: starting with a good cup of coffee.

At BearingPoint, we value flexibility and trust. Many roles offer remote or hybrid working models, depending on the position and client needs. For consulting roles, some travel may be necessary, especially when working directly with clients on-site. However, we support our employees in finding a work setup that fits their lifestyle and enables them to perform at their best. While you don’t need to live near an office, having the option to visit one of our locations can be beneficial for collaboration, networking, and making the most of our vibrant office culture. Personally, I find that being on-site can add significant value because certain nuances and informal exchanges are harder to capture remotely; something that can be particularly important in consulting. If you’re interested in a specific role, we recommend checking the job description or contacting our recruitment team for details on location flexibility.

In the past year, BearingPoint recognized that speed and flexibility in hiring decisions are essential to stay competitive in today’s fast-moving market. This led to a stronger focus on candidate experience, with more personalized communication and quicker feedback becoming standard practice. Recruiting the right talent is key to our continued growth, which is why we’re constantly refining our approach. We place great importance on employer branding, not just to attract applicants, but to ensure we find people who genuinely fit our culture and ambitions. By improving how we connect with candidates from the first interaction, we aim to build strong foundations for successful, long-term collaboration.

I decided to join BearingPoint mainly because of the people and the overall vibe. I really liked the diverse team and the combination of tech and consulting, which felt like the right mix for me. The projects are super interesting, especially with the focus on AI, technology, and management. What really convinced me, though, was the atmosphere. I had the chance to meet some of my future colleagues and managers beforehand, and everyone was just genuinely great to talk to. It gave me a really good gut feeling, and I could tell that “easy to work with” isn’t just a slogan here, it actually describes how people collaborate at BearingPoint.

In general, deep programming or developer expertise is not mandatory for entry-level roles at BearingPoint. What matters most are strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of business processes, and the willingness to engage with digital topics. Basic technical knowledge, such as familiarity with data models or digital platforms is an advantage since many projects involve bridging business and IT. BearingPoint offers two main career paths that define your medium-term development direction: Business Consulting and Technology Consulting. Business Consulting focuses on advising clients on business strategies, organizational models and process optimization. It combines deep industry and functional expertise with strong project management skills, ensuring that complex initiatives are delivered on time and within scope. Typical responsibilities include designing business strategies, managing transformation programs, and driving change management efforts to help organizations achieve operational excellence. Technology Consulting, on the other hand, centers on leveraging technology to enable business transformation. This path emphasizes expertise in IT systems, software development, and integration of complex platforms. Consultants in this area design and implement digital solutions, support data-driven decision-making, and guide clients through large-scale IT transformations to enhance efficiency and innovation. Both paths provide opportunities for specialization and leadership, and transitions between them are possible based on your interests and organizational needs. Furthermore, BearingPoint offers extensive learning opportunities (Be.School, e-learning, certifications like Scrum Master, PMP, and cloud certifications) to strengthen both business and technical skills allowing you to fill IT knowledge gaps and grow in your chosen path.

Hi and thank you for your question! It depends on the topic you worked for as a research assistant and whether this is relevant for the individual position. Same for the startup experience. Unfortunately, I cannot give you a generel answer. It could be that your experience as a research assistant and also for co-founding a startup is considered relevant experience, but maybe less so than experience in the industry or a consultancy.  Hope that helps!

Hi and thanks for your question! Consulting experience or internship/working student experience in the industry is mostly one of our requirements - at least for BearingPoint Germany. In case you have none and you are still conducting your studies, you can also apply for internship or working student positions: Stellenangebote | BearingPoint Deutschland.

Weitere Infos hierzu kannst du auch auf unserer Website nachlesen: Diversity and Inclusion at BearingPoint | BearingPoint.
