McKinsey / ex-Interviewer at McKinsey / I will coach you to rock those interviews

Every time a candidate would put a word “reading” into the hobbies section on their CV, I really loved to ask this question. I am myself a voracious reader, and I love a good discussion on books – so, I would definitely ask a candidate in the beginning of an interview what is his or her favourite book or what is the good book that they’ve read recently. So you better have an answer for this, or don’t put it on your CV :)

As regards to what to reply – of course, there is no right or wrong answer here. Just be honest and authentic, do not make stuff up or mention a book you’ve never read (because your interviewer might have). So, if you enjoy non-fiction and topics like biology and genetics, talk about it. But also if you enjoy adventure novels or modern crime fiction, talk about it. In the end what matters is that you are able to show a bit of who you are. MBB are looking for unique personalities – people who are interesting to talk to, people whose company both clients and the colleagues would enjoy, people who can inspire by their uniqueness. So, do not be afraid to show it :)

Oh so hard to choose! I have several favorite books for different reasons. For a long time it was Bram Stoker's “Dracula”, rivalled only by Ann Rice's “Vampire Chronicles” and Elizabeth Kostova's “The Historian”. Now, I've been a lot more into realistic fictions so then, I would have to say it is a strong tie between Khaled Hosseini's “A Thousand Splendid Suns” and Gabriel Garcia Marquez's “One Hundred Years of Solitude”. Both writers do such a fantastic job of bringing you into a different culture and history, and cause the reader to become very introspective. I just relish that!

The Road Less Traveled - Scott Peck.

This book was one of those life-altering reads. It introduced me to psychological perspectives I could have never stumbled upon on my own, and illustrated it with real-life examples. It really helped me introspect in a healthy way, learn a fortune and was overall an enjoyable read, and was not in any way difficult to follow.

A more beautiful question, because as we grow up, we kinda forget to question more, to get more out of the world and the possibilities it has for us.

I couldn't pick a favorite book, but a book that really changed the paradigm for me in the last two years was “The Horse, the Wheel and Language”, a book that combines philology and archeology to paint a picture of the proto indoeuropean cultures. It showed me how old some of our beliefs and customs are, and cleared some misconceptions on societal structures.
