I am an ex-Roland Berger senior consultant and worked in the Brussels and Shanghai offices. As a consultant, I have performed around 1 interview a week for almost 3 years. I have also coached students before they enter the recruiting process to teach them about the world of consulting.
I believe a successful preparation process lies on 3 principles:
1) Get feedback from different angles: You will meet between 4 and 6 interviewers during a typical recruiting process. While the general evaluation criteria remain the same, I know from experience that different interviewers have different perception on the same candidate. Therefore I strongly recommend not using only one coach, but getting feedback from various sources to avoid any potential blind spot.
2) Be client - and consultant - friendly: You've heard it before: being client friendly is a quality of any successful consultant. However, during the interview process, recruiters on the other side are also wondering whether they want to work with you day-in day-out during long and complicated projects. I have seen highly capable candidates be rejected because of attitude issues during a 30-minute interview. Learn how to be consultant-friendly and appear at your best during the interview.
3) Make it yours: Best performing candidates are the ones who really take the case and the interview as if they were already on the job. Don't try to apply a theoretical framework on a complex case because you've seen it in a book: act as if you were a consultant working on a project and consider the interviewer as a colleague helping you on the case.
