Working on previous Masters thesis while being employed

I'm gonna join an MBB soon, right from my Master degree (non-business). My thesis advisor is interested to publish my thesis work in a research journal, which I'm also excited about. Would it be against the policy to work on it during my free time when I'm employed later? Is it wise to ask someone inside (HR/partner) about this?

Most companies have a clause in their contracts, which will prevent you from dedicating your time to other activities. These are typically commercial but it depends on the wording in your contract..

As pointed out previously, you will not really have any “free time” when working in MBB in a junior role. Hence, any outside activity will by necessity take away from your focus and energy.

Rather than worrying about whether or not it´s allowed, you should consider whether or not it´s even feasible. I would generally strongly advise against any commitments outside of work prior to having started.

However, if this is part of the MSc, which is the basis for your employment, this may look different. In that case, reach out to HR asap to discuss. However, I understand that it´s just about publishing your work so it´s not technically required to receive your degree.

Hi there,

I wouldn't say it's against policy, but I think you need to think again on this “free time” you're assuming.

In particular, the first year of the job is the toughest. I'm not one to tell people to not chase their dreams, but please be careful here - if you're doing your thesis AND starting MBB you are at great risk of immense burnout and underperformance in the job.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the great master's thesis!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, I would advise you to clarify with HR as soon as you have started working for MBB. While personally, I think it will not be of any interest to your future employer since it is not an employment, it is still meaningful to be on the safe side here.
  • Still, I would advise you to - if possible - first wait for your first months at your future employer before promising the publishment to your professor. Especially the first couple of months might be very tough for newjoiners and you should not burn out right in the beginning.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best tackle your consulting career entry and prepare your master's thesis for being published, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hello!

99% no problem, but do check with your PD (you will be assigned one upon starting with McK)

I worked during my free time during my time in McK in my NGO, and it was all okay.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offer!

The best thing would be to check your employment contract. I would not expect it to be against the company policy, in case of doubts I would clarify it with HR.

As you will hardly have much time for working on the thesis in any case, I would avoid to have strict deadlines for the publication as it would create additional stress.

Best,

Francesco

Hi,

As Ian pointed out, the issue here is not that it is against company policy (it is not) but more that you will just not have the time and energy to dedicate to it. If you truly want to do this, I would delay MBB start by a month and focus on the paper during that time. Planning to do it while at MBB is as good as saying it won't happen.

No, it's not a problem to do it. But that is not a good plan. Consulting is very demanding. You need your free time to recover. You won't have that much free time (if you think you will, you should reevaluate, as you have the wrong perception), and I doubt you really want to spend it all working on your thesis. It might even not be enough, and you may have to stretch yourself too thin - beware of burnout or of being unsuccessful of one of the ends. You should avoid both cases.
